“La gaita zuliana, como muchas otras manifestaciones del costumbrismo latinoamericano, es mestiza. Tiene un mosaico genético poliétnico, pero su raíz es hispana, aunque la hispanidad se conserve en progresiones muy diferentes a la gaita maracaibera (llamada también gaita de furro), canto de criollos urbanos, en quienes sobrevive con fuerza, en comparación con la gaita de tambora y la perijanera, en las cuales la negritud deja una marca más intensa”.[cita requerida]
Este estudioso del folklore señala que la gaita es española, pero que con el tiempo surgieron dos tendencias divergentes: La gaita maracaibera y las gaitas negras. Esta opinión ha generado polémicas, sin embargo es bastante compartida, ya que el término "gaita" es de raíz galaico-portuguesa: viene del gótico "gaits" que significa “cabra”, porque el fuelle de la gaita gallega se hace con el cuero del caprino. De España a través de los Países árabes africanos llegó hasta Turquía, en cuya lengua se traduce como “flauta del pastor”, lo que estaría de acuerdo con el dibujo que encontró Agustín Pérez Piñango con la gaita Glorioso San Sebastián, que data de 1668, según documento localizado en el antiguo Colegio Nacional de Maracaibo, que trae la letra y la música en caracteres gregorianos. Sería la gaita más antigua que se conoce. Sin embargo, otros estudiosos, entre ellos Juan de Dios Martínez sostiene que la gaita se inició con los esclavos negros en las haciendas del Sur del Lago, como protesta y evocando sus fiestas de las zonas africanas de donde provenían.
