Go Home Get Down
Death from Above 1979 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So that you're not alone
I want to take you home with me
Well let's stay up all night
Or you can while I fall asleep

Don't ask, I don't know
This is all, this is on
Don't tell me, you don't know
I'll come back when I go
C'mon, let's go home
You're my friend I want you to know
Don't tell me you don't know
I'll come back if I go

So if you tell me that you'll have me
Never leave me 'til I die
Why try?
But if we're living and we're happy
And I come back when I go
You will know

So if you tell me that you'll have me
Never leave me 'til I die
Why try?
But if we're living and we're happy
And I come back when I go
You will know

Don't ask, I don't know
I'll come back when I go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Go Home Get Down seem to be about seeking companionship, and finding that in a friend. The first verse opens with an invitation to come home together, to "stay up all night" or just "while I fall asleep." The singer wants to assure the friend that they're not alone, and possibly looking for comfort or solace in companionship with another person.

The next verse seems to include an attempt at resolving some kind of conflict or misunderstanding. The singer declares "Don't ask, I don't know," and claims that something is "all" or at least "on." The friend is then told, "Don't tell me you don't know / I'll come back if I go." It's not entirely clear what the singer is referring to, but they seem to be trying to put the past aside and look forward to the future.

The chorus then repeats the lines, "You will know", seems to be a declaration of commitment towards the friend. The eventual resolution of the song seems to be that the singer is open to the possibility of a deeper relationship with the friend, but relies on them being mutually happy and content with each other. The final line, "I'll come back when I go" could be interpreted as a commitment to maintaining the friendship even if, at some point, circumstances may have to take the singer away.
