Hex Girlfriend
Neon Indian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Friday flight feeling smeared and vexed
Girl caught, parking lot of the Cineplex
Stupid face looking so perplexed
Seeming like it was caught in a hex

"Does it make you, does it make you feel alright?"
"Did they make you, did they make you feel alright?"

Sullen sights always indirect
Tired eyes hypnotized by your teenage sect
Weekend rituals resurrecting
Feelings our sober minds reject

"Does it make you, does it make you feel alright?"
"Did they make you, did they make you feel alright?"

I know I won't be here forever
Slow burn fades into a dream
My flesh won't follow me forever
But your touch is far and few between

Overall Meaning

In Neon Indian's song Hex Girlfriend, the singer talks about a Friday night that didn't go as planned. The lyrics begin with the singer feeling frustrated and vexed, probably because something went wrong on their flight. The next line reveals that he's with a girl who looks perplexed and stupid, and they're at the parking lot of a Cineplex. The use of the word "hex" in the last line suggests that something is off, and it paints a picture of a girl who's caught in some sort of spell or enchantment.

The chorus repeats the lines "Does it make you, does it make you feel alright?" and "Did they make you, did they make you feel alright?" This could be the singer asking the girl if she's okay, or if she's happy with how things turned out. Perhaps the "they" in the latter line refers to someone who's responsible for the girl's current state. The verse then goes on to describe the girl's teenage sect, which makes the singer feel hypnotized and drawn to her. However, their weekend rituals make them feel things that their sober minds would reject.

The bridge talks about how the singer knows that their time with the girl won't last forever, and that eventually, they'll have to go their separate ways. The line "slow burn fades into a dream" indicates that their time together was fleeting and may have been a delusion. The last line seems to be about how the girl's touch is something that he craves but doesn't get often, suggesting that she's not as invested in their relationship as he is.

I used to blast this song in my first car on the way back home after work, back in high school. Got off late at night, stars out, windows completely down, volume all the way up. I worked at a Dairy Queen that was a little far out from my parents place.
Had to take a major highway home, so the speed only made my youthful spirit fly higher, haha! I have to admit, it was a different feeling back then. No real responsibilities and the future seemed so exciting. Thank you for being part of my teenagehood Neon Indian!

Its strange, I've always been a fan of this genera of music; however, I've never met another person in real life that is. My friends still look at me weird when I blast this song. I sometimes wish I could go back in time and just sit in a chair and do homework again drinking strong coffee listening to Zeilsteen on Itunes. Simple times...
