Murdermile
The Kills Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This ain't murdermile
That's just the way I smile
You're like hot oil
Got your roots down in a fire

Spitting shit like a tire
Got your foot down and your mind down
To it's last little wire
Come on! Come on!

It's a train wreck
You got me on the wrong track, honey
It's a train wreck
You got me on the wrong track, honey

It's piling up one by one
It's piling up one by one
You look bluer, do your do or die
But I ain't pull or push that pin in your side

A body split in two doesn't know how to sleep
A body split in two doesn't know how to sleep
You're standing on your head, while you're standing on your feet
A body split in two doesn't know how to sleep

It's a train wreck
You got me on the wrong track, honey
It's a train wreck
You got me on the wrong track, honey

It's piling up one by one
It's piling up one by one
It's piling up one by one

Overall Meaning

The Kills' song "Murdermile" is a gritty ballad about being trapped in a tumultuous relationship. The first verse features the line "This ain't murdermile, that's just the way I smile", which seems to suggest that the singer is trying to play off her dangerous nature as simply being part of her personality. The second line, "You're like hot oil, got your roots down in a fire", implies that the other person in the relationship is equally combustible and that the two of them together make for a volatile combination.

The chorus, "It's a train wreck, you got me on the wrong track, honey", reinforces this idea of being trapped and powerless in a situation that is inevitably going to end in disaster. The repetition of "it's piling up one by one" suggests that there are a number of issues and problems that are accumulating and building towards some kind of breaking point.

The bridge of the song features the ominous lines "A body split in two doesn't know how to sleep, you're standing on your head while you're standing on your feet". This imagery adds to the sense of disorientation and instability that pervades the entire song. The overall effect is a kind of desperation and resignation - the singer knows she's in a bad situation but doesn't know how to extricate herself from it.
