Lover to Lover
Florence + the Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been losin' sleep
I've been keepin' myself awake
I've been wandering the streets
For days and days and days

Oh if I'm road to road
Back to back, lover to lover
And black to red, but I believe
I believe

There's no salvation for me now
No space among the clouds
And I feel I'm heading down
That's alright, that's alright
That's alright, that's alright

And I've been taking chances
I've been setting myself up for the fall
And I've been keeping secrets
From my heart and from my soul

Going from road to road
Bed to bed, lover to lover
And black to red
But I believe, I believe

There's no salvation for me now
No space among the clouds
And I feel that I'm heading down
But that's alright, that's alright
That's alright, that's alright

Rood to road, bed to bed
And lover to lover
And black to red
And road to road, bed to bed
And lover to lover

No space among the clouds
And I feel I'm heading down
But that's alright, that's alright
That's alright, that's alright
That's alright, that's alright

Road to road, bed to bed
And lover to lover
And black to red
And road to road, bed to bed

Lover to lover, to lover to lover
To lover, to lover, to lover, to lover
To lover, to lover, to lover, to lover (woo)

No salvation for me now
No salvation for me now
No salvation for me now
No salvation for me now

Overall Meaning

The song “Lover to Lover” is a melancholic yet empowering track from Florence + the Machine's second studio album “Ceremonials”. In the song, the singer reflects on her struggles with love and relationships, feeling lost and directionless. She has been wandering the streets for days and taking chances, but she accepts that there may be no salvation for her. This is shown in the lines, “There's no salvation for me now, No space among the clouds, And I feel I'm heading down, But that's alright, that's alright”.

Despite this, the song is not entirely hopeless. The singer keeps moving forward and holding onto her belief, indicated with the repetition of “I believe” throughout the song. She has been going from road to road, bed to bed, and lover to lover, embracing both the dark and light aspects of love. The lines, “And black to red” suggest the contrast of love's passionate intensity and the pain of heartbreak. Despite the ups and downs, she accepts that the journey is worthwhile.

Overall, “Lover to Lover” is a song about the emotional rollercoaster of love, acknowledging the struggles and pain, but urging the listener to persevere with hope and belief.

"Lover To Lover"

I've been losing sleep,
I've been keeping myself awake,
I've been wandering the streets,
For days and days and days,

Going from road to road
Bed to bed
Lover to lover,
And black to red,

But I believe,
I believe...

There's no salvation for me now,
No space among the clouds,
And I feel I'm heading down,
But that's alright,
That's alright,
That's alright!
That's alright!

And I've been taking chances,
I've been setting myself up for the fall,
I've been keeping secrets,
From my heart and from my soul

Going from road to road,
Bed to bed,
Lover to lover,
Black to red,

But I believe,
I believe...
There's no salvation for me now,
No space among the clouds,
And I feel I'm heading down,
But that's alright,
That's alright,
That's alright!
That's alright!

Going from road to road,
And bed to bed,
And lover to lover,
And black to red,
And road to road,
Bed to bed,
And lover to lover!

No space among the clouds...
And I feel I'm heading down...
But that's alright,
That's alright,
That's alright!
That's alright!
That's alright!
That's alright!

Road to road!
Bed to bed!
And lover to lover!
And black to red!
And road to road!
Bed to bed!
Lover to lover
To lover to lover
To lover to lover
To lover to lover
To lover to lover
To lover to lover...

No salvation for me now...
No salvation for me now...
No salvation for me now...
No salvation for me now...

I was actually on the set of this video during filming. Florence's voice is so amazingly powerful, we could hear her singing over the track half way down the street by the trailers. Such a beautiful woman with such amazing talent, even though in the words of her manager and a couple others, she was having a crappy day that day.

This song is the bridge between Ceremonials and How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful

@briansachs

She should be an actress... she has such a powerfull sense of expresivity... her expressions are just to real.

@zhenyilani4535

I second this! She could be an actress or a model or really anything she wants to be!!! I wonder if she will ever act in maybe other people's music videos. (I remember her job in Sweet Nothing made me sob, because it was so convincing!)
