Alexandra Leaving
Leonard Cohen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Suddenly the night has grown colder
The god of love preparing to depart
Alexandra hoisted on his shoulder
They slip between the sentries of the heart

Upheld by the simplicities of pleasure
They gain the light, they formlessly entwine
And radiant beyond your widest measure
They fall among the voices and the wine

It's not a trick, your senses all deceiving
A fitful dream, the morning will exhaust
Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving
Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost

Even though she sleeps upon your satin
Even though she wakes you with a kiss
Do not say the moment was imagined
Do not stoop to strategies like this

As someone long prepared for this to happen
Go firmly to the window, drink it in
Exquisite music, Alexandra laughing
Your first commitments, tangible again

And you who had the honor of her evening
And by the honor had your own restored
Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving
Alexandra leaving with her Lord

Even though she sleeps upon your satin
Even though she wakes you with a kiss
Do not say the moment was imagined
Do not stoop to strategies like this

As someone long prepared for the occasion
In full command of every plan you wrecked
Do not choose a coward's explanation
That hides behind the cause and the effect

And you who were bewildered by a meaning
Whose code was broken, crucifix uncrossed
Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving
Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost

Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving
Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost

Overall Meaning

The song "Alexandra Leaving" by Leonard Cohen is a beautiful piece that speaks about love, loss, and the fleeting nature of time. The song is a poetic portrayal of a couple's last moments together before they part ways forever. The opening lines set the mood beautifully, "Suddenly the night has grown colder, The god of love preparing to depart". The couple is aware that their time together is limited and they must make the most of it. Alexandra is portrayed as being hoisted on the shoulder of the god of love as they move past "the sentries of the heart".

As the couple makes their way into the night, they are "upheld by the simplicities of pleasure". They live in the moment, and their love surpasses any measure of this world. However, the moment is fleeting, and they are conscious of it. The next day, "the morning will exhaust" their fitful dream, and they must say goodbye to Alexandra leaving. The lyrics urge the listener not to dismiss the moment as imagined and not to stoop to strategies like this as they say goodbye.

In the final verse, the song takes a philosophical turn. The listener is implored to not choose a coward's explanation, hiding behind the cause and effect. The song seems to be asking the listener to let go of all their rationalizations and accept the inevitability of loss. The song's final message is poignant, "Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving, Then say goodbye to Alexandra lost". In essence, the song is asking the listener to appreciate and cherish the beautiful moments of their lives when they have them, and to let them go gracefully when they must.

The god forsakes Antony

When suddenly, at midnight, you hear
an invisible procession going by
with exquisite music, voices,
dont mourn your luck thats failing now,
work gone wrong, your plans
all proving deceptivedont mourn them uselessly.
As one long prepared, and graced with courage,
say goodbye to her, the Alexandria that is leaving.
Above all, dont fool yourself, dont say
it was a dream, your ears deceived you:
dont degrade yourself with empty hopes like these.
As one long prepared, and graced with courage,
as is right for you who were given this kind of city,
go firmly to the window
and listen with deep emotion, but not
with the whining, the pleas of a coward;
listenyour final delectationto the voices,
to the exquisite music of that strange procession,
and say goodbye to her, to the Alexandria you are losing.

When i was a kid, i'm 44 now. I got a cassette with Various position. I played the cassette on repeat for many years. When i listen to those songs today, i can smell the same smell from when i was a kid, i can feel the exact feelings from when i was a kid listening to those songs. Strange how big of an impact music can have on us. I love it...

@SashaLipskaia

I feel so connected to this. Alexandrs is my name too- and it feels eerie as if She is coming in stronger now- in a soul-song.

@mfphonepics

The quality of the poetry in this poem/song soars way above the sea of mundane lyrics in other songs.

It puts my soul in a headlock every time

@theronwolf3296

In my mind that song belongs to a incredible woman who wandered into my life about 8 years ago when I was in my mid 60s. She changed my life, then disappeared during the pandemic. Wherever you are, Leslie, this song is for you.
