Silvertown Blues
Mark Knopfler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On Silvertown Way, the cranes stand high
Quiet and gray against the still of the sky
They won't quit and lay down though the action has died
They watch the new game in town on the Blackwall side

From the poisonous drains a vision appears
New circle of cranes, a new reason to be here
A big silver dome rising up into the dawn
Above the church and the homes were all the silver is gone

If I'd a bucket of gold, what would I do
I'd leave the story untold Silvertown blues
Going down Silvertown
Down in Silverdown
Going down Silvertown
Down in Silverdown

A silver dawn steals over the docks
A truck with no weels up on cinderblocks
Men with no dreams around a fire in a drum
Scrap metal schemes are rusted over and done

If I'd a bucket of gold, silver would do
I'd leave the story untold Silvertown blues
Going down Silvertown
Down in Silverdown
Going down Silvertown
Down in Silverdown

When you're standing on thin and dangerous ice
You can knock and walk in for citizens' advice
They'll tell you the where you can turn, where you can go
There's nothing they can tell me I don't already know

If I'd a bucket of gold, silver would do
I'd leave the story untold Silvertown blues
Going down Silvertown
Down in Silverdown
Going down Silvertown
Down in Silverdown

From the Caning Town train I see a billboard high
There's a big silverplane raising up into the sky
And I can make out the words 'seven flights every day'
Says six of those birds are bound for JFK

If I'd a bucket of gold, silver would do
I'd leave the story untold Silvertown blues
And I'm going down in Silvertown
Down in Silverdown
Going down Silvertown
Down in Silverdown

Overall Meaning

The song Silvertown Blues by Mark Knopfler is a bleak portrayal of the harsh reality of life in Silvertown, a district in the East End of London famous for its industrial history. The song paints a vivid picture of the dilapidated and impoverished streets, contrasting with the towering cranes that dot the skyline. The cranes symbolize the industrial heritage of the area, while the truck with no wheels and the men with no dreams indicate its current state of decay. The poisonous drains and the rusted scrap metal schemes complete the picture of a place that has fallen on hard times.

The lyrics also touch on the futility and sense of hopelessness that pervades Silvertown. Despite the new circle of cranes that emerge, there is no sense of renewal or optimism. The bucket of gold that the singer longs for would not make a difference - the story would remain untold, and the Silvertown blues would persist. The citizens' advice center offers no help, as there is nothing they can tell him that he does not already know. The billboard advertising the silver plane that takes off from Silvertown to JFK Airport serves as a reminder of the area's isolation and insignificance.

I am getting so sentimental
accompanied with ambigue feelings
listening to this fabulous ballade
from Mark Knopfler
admiring and being irritated
at the same time
by the slow film passing the
modern silver town - landscape
showing the lonely car - driver
on their way home in the dusk
cold bureauhouses - perfection
around them !

I'm not saying MK is the best song writer/guitarist/singer but he's definitely in the top 1

@gma7067

Singer not even at the top 500. But he's among the best in the other stuff

And I say MK is the best ☝️

There is another scale in music. How many people have been influenced by the musician? I know for sure that Mark's music has become the soundtrack of many people's lives.

People always say "MK is one of the best guitarists of all time". That may be so, but that's to sell him so short. Everything he sings, he wrote. That gigantic back catalogue of amazing lyrics, rhyme and tune all came straight out of his head. Then it's all set to the sound of the unmistakable guitar. For me, he is absolutely unique in that he is one of the greatest writers of music alive today and one of the greatest guitarists at the same time.

@freeyourmind8305

To me he is the best componist of this time like Mozart back in the days, AND also the greatest guitar player all time. And he does all of that completely sober i guess.

Have to agree, just hope we get to see another album in near future. Enormous talent.
