Small Hands
Keaton Henson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Miss you terribly already,
Miss the space between your eyelids,
Where I'd stare through awkward sentences
And avoid through awkward silence

Miss your teeth when they chatter,
When we smoked out in my garden
When we couldn't sleep for all the heat,
Soft talk began to harden.

Miss your small hands in the palm of mine
The fact they're good at making,
Miss your sitting up incessantly,
And the fact you're always waking in the night, night.

And I,
I hope for your life
You forget about mine
Forget about mine

Miss your teeth dug in my shoulder,
As we rolled in early morning,
Miss your arm dying beneath me,
As I lay there simply yawning

Please forget me, you were right dear,
I am cold and self-involved,
And though I'll miss you, recent lover
I am weak and therefore fold

Get distracted by my music,
Think of nothing else but art
I'll write my loneliness in poems,
If I can just think how to start

Dot my I's with eyebrow pencils,
Close my eyelids, hide my eyes,
I'll be idle in my ideals,
Think of nothing else but I.

I, and I

And I,
I hope for your life
You can forget about mine
Just forget about mine
Oh, mine.

Overall Meaning

The song "Small Hands" by Keaton Henson is a poignant reflection on the aftermath of a breakup. Through his lyrics, Henson expresses his nostalgia and longing for his former lover, while acknowledging his own shortcomings that may have contributed to the end of the relationship. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as Henson declares his deep and immediate longing for his ex-partner. He misses the intimacy they shared, from the way she blinked to the way she fidgeted with her hands. He reflects on the moments when they were close but also the moments of awkwardness and silence that they experienced.

The second paragraph moves on to Henson's reminiscing about the little things they shared together, like smoking in the garden or staying up late talking. He specifically mentions the smallness of his ex-lover's hands and how they were good at "making," which could allude to the physical intimacy they shared. However, he also mentions how she would wake up in the middle of the night, suggesting that the relationship was not without its challenges.

@leleelvis7979

Could you explain

@pedrohenriquea.1477

+lele elvis It shows how lonely he is, it's a word play with "i", how he is just by himself. Dot my "i's" with eye*i*ball pencil, hide my eye*i*s, close my eye*i*s i*ll be *i*dle in *my *i*deas, think of nothing else but *i*, i, i. (The * is to represent the "i's" that he put, to focus that he's just by himself, sorry if i made it complicated)
