Israel Kamakawiwo'ole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Henehene ko aka, kou le 'ale 'a paha
He mea ma 'a mau ia, for you and I.

Ka'a uila makeneki, he 'oni'oni kou kino
He mea ma 'a mau ia, for you and I

I Kaka 'ako makou, 'ai ana I ka pipi stew
He mea ma 'a mau ia, for you and I

I Kapahulu makou, 'ai ana lipoa
He mea ma 'a ia, for you and I

I Waikiki makou, 'au anai ke kai
He mea ma 'a mau ia, for you and I

Our eyes have met, our lips not yet
Palama pono kou kino, when we put inside

Haina mai ka puana, kou le 'ale 'a paha
He mea ma 'a ia, for you and I

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's song Henehene Kou 'Aka are poetic and romantic. The song speaks of the beauty and intimacy of falling in love. The recurring line of "He mea ma 'a mau ia, for you and I" means "It's a thing that belongs to us" or "It's ours forever."

The song opens with the line "Henehene ko aka, kou le 'ale 'a paha," which roughly translates to "Smiling your smile, your lips perhaps." This line emphasizes on the attraction and connection between the two people. The use of the word "perhaps" suggests the uncertainty of whether the two will share a kiss or not.

The following lines talk about the couple sharing meals together in various locations like Kaka'ako, Kapahulu, and Waikiki. The lyrics also highlight the beauty of the environment around, like the crashing waves in Waikiki. The final lines of the song talk about how the two have encountered each other, but their lips haven't met yet, and encourages them to embrace the moment by saying "Palama pono kou kino" which means "Hold your body close."

Overall, Henehene Kou 'Aka is a song about the excitement and beauty of falling in love and the lyrics perfectly capture the emotions and experiences that come along with it.

How can this not have more views? This one of his last performances if not his last. Recorded just 3 months before his passing. He was hospitalized later on. Shame that the younger generations can't respect legends like him from Germany, 14 Years old.
