As Loke Falls
Amon Amarth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Heimdall gazes east
A sail has caught his eye
He lifts his hand and sounds the horn
The undead army has arrived

Here comes Nagelfar
With Laufey's son on board
He brings chaos, hate and wrath
He brings the war to end all wars

Heimdall knows his fate
The end of all nine worlds
It's what the Vala has foreseen
He knows that everything shall burn

Facing Lopt's deceit
Now they finally meet
The champion and his enemy
On Vigrid's plains they'll find defeat

Their swords meet in a mighty clash
War cries sound, horns they blast
Their eager weapons whip and thrash
This day when all shall end

The lords of war are equal strong
This battle frantic and forlorn
The blades sing a macabre song
This day when all shall end

Heimdall's blade bites burning sharp
As it cuts through flesh and bone
Blood comes gushing from the wound
As Loke's head falls tumbling
Rolling to the burning ground

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Amon Amarth's song As Loke Falls depict a scene from Norse mythology about a great battle that marks the end of the world. The story begins with Heimdall, the god of watchfulness and the guardian of the Bifrost (the rainbow bridge), who sees a sail approaching from the east. He sounds his horn to warn the other gods that the undead army has arrived. On the ship called Nagelfar, which is made of dead men's nails, is Laufey's son, also known as Loki, who brings chaos, hate, and wrath. He is the enemy of the gods and the one responsible for the end of the world.

Heimdall knows that the end of all nine worlds is coming, which was foreseen by the Vala (a Norse prophetess). He faces Loki who has deceived him and finally meets the enemy. Both warriors equally match each other and engage in a mighty clash on Vigrid's plains, the site of the final battle. The swords clash, war cries fill the air, and the blades sing a macabre song. Blood flows and Heimdall's blade cuts Loki's head, which falls to the ground, marking the end of everything.

In conclusion, the song As Loke Falls is a grandiose narrative of the legendary Ragnarok, the battle that brings the world to its ultimate end, where Asgard and its gods perish.

I hear ya. My introduction to melodeath was a long journey, and looking back on it, I can see each step of the transitions in my musical taste, from trance all the way to metal.

Metal was just starting to feel a bit stale to me when I first heard this song, and I was instantly reminded of everything I love about this genre.

I think there's something that people who've never really tried to experience this music is missing. There is intense emotion in every syllable, every thrum of the guitar strings, every beat of the drums. The growling, then the yelling, tells it's own story of the building passion that goes into every track.

Such emotion and passion as cannot be contained is all expelles in the course of a single track.

Melodeath for life!
