I Was a Fool
Tegan and Sara Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you remember I searched you out?
How I climbed your city's walls
Do you remember me as devout?
How I prayed for your calls
I stood still, it's what I did
Love like ours is never fixed

I stuck around
I did behave,
I saved you every time
I was a fool for love
I was a fool for love
I was a fool
I was a fool

Then you blamed me and blocked me out
How long did you think I'd last?
Then you disappeared for weeks to pout
How many times could I pack?
But stand still is all I did
Love like ours is never fixed

Still I stuck around
I did behave
I saved you every time
I was a fool for love
I was a fool for love
I was a fool (I was a fool for love)
I was a fool (I was a fool for love)

If you're worried
That I might've changed
Left behind all of my foolish ways
You best be looking for somebody else
Without a foolish heart
A foolish heart

But stand still is all we did (That's all we did)
Love like ours is never fixed

I stuck around
I did behave,
I saved you every time
I was a fool for love (I was a fool for love)
I was a fool for love
I was a fool (I was a fool for love)
I was a fool (I was a fool for love)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tegan and Sara's song "I Was a Fool" tell a story of a love that was never meant to be. The singer reminisces about how they once went to great lengths to be with their lover, even climbing the walls of their city to be with them. The singer was devout in their love and prayed for calls from their lover. But despite their efforts, the love was never fixed.

The relationship takes a turn for the worse when the singer is blamed for something and blocked out by their lover. The lover disappears for weeks to pout, causing the singer to wonder how long they could last in the relationship. But despite the turmoil, the singer continues to stick around and save their lover every time something goes wrong. The singer was a "fool for love" and would do anything for their lover.

The chorus repeats the line "I was a fool for love" four times, emphasizing the singer's devotion to their lover. The final lines of the song indicate that the love was never meant to be, as the singer tells their lover to look for someone without a foolish heart.

Overall, the song tells a poignant story of unrequited love and the pain that comes with it.

This song really hits me in the heart. 80s vibes, a simple pop ballad, but it's just something much more than that. T&S, its your vocals and melodies that complete the song. I get nostalgic every time I hear, "I Was A Fool."
