The Underdog
Spoon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Picture yourself in a living room
Your pipe and slippers set out for you
I know you think that it ain't too far
But I
I hear a call of a lifetime ring
Felt the need to get up for it
Oh, you cut out the middleman
Get free from the middleman

You got no time for the messenger
Got no regard for the thing that you don't understand
You got no fear of the underdog
That's why you will not survive

I wanna forget how conviction fits
But can I get out from under it?
Can I cut it out of me? Oh, oh, oh
It can't all be wedding cake
It can't all be boiled away
I try but I can't let go of it
Can't let go of it

Uh-huh, 'cause you don't talk to the water boy
And there's so much you could learn but you don't wanna know
You will not back up an inch ever
That's why you will not survive

The thing that I tell you now
It may not go over well
Oh, and it may not be photo-op
In the way that I spell it out

But you won't hear from the messenger
Don't wanna know 'bout something that you don't understand
You got no fear of the underdog
That's why you will not survive, right!

Overall Meaning

In Spoon's song The Underdog, the lyrics describe a scenario where a person is comfortable in their living room with their pipe and slippers but hears a call of a lifetime and decides to get up for it, to take a chance and cut out the middleman. The song touches on the idea of standing up for oneself, of not being afraid of the underdog, of not being a slave to convention or authority. The song addresses those who have no regard for what they don't understand, who won't back down, who won't listen to or learn from the messenger. These people, the song says, won't survive because they don't have the flexibility or open-mindedness to adapt to changing circumstances or unexpected challenges.

The lyrics suggest that there is a kind of conviction that one needs to cut out in order to break free from the status quo, to not let the fear of the unknown or the underdog hold you back. The wedding cake metaphor suggests that life is not always easy or sweet, that one needs to be prepared to deal with the hard, unpalatable aspects of life. The song seems to be an anthem for those who are willing to take a risk, to venture into uncharted waters, to seek out something better than what they currently have.

Amazing song from one of the most underrated bands around

@Gutbomber

has anyone seen these guys in Austin, texas? I have! I was told that they're a texas band. awesome.

@josephritz5736

Peter B would you say they re an underdog?

@tjohnphillips

Doesn't matter to me (maybe to them, but I doubt it) if they're underrated. So are the Pixies, but both still great, beyond compare.

@ryanjavierortega8513

Tim Phillips Yeah, Spoon is basically a massively popular Band. They're Rock Stars.

I remember when Britt and Conor did the Split in Conor's parent's home basement, and Pitchfork wrote that it was amazing that two Rock Stars this huge were able to be for on the phone at the same time, let alone in a basement in Omaha...

@ryanjavierortega8513

I don’t think Spoon is underrated...I mean, everyone (even those that dislike them) agree they have created an original sound.

Everyone out here talking about where they found this song and I'm just amazed that they filmed this all in one shot

@garnetavi

It might be a editing trick. There are ways to fake a long shot (like the used in Birdman).

Russian Ark

@harrymccue1334

This is literally one of the greatest songs ever made
