Beachy Head
Veronica Falls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh
Ahhh Ahhh Ahhh
White cliffs coming to a raging sea
Riptide’s gonna push the life of me
I’m gonna miss you
I’m gonna miss you
When you’re gone

Beachy Head
They’re not dead
They saw the waves below
That’s no way to go

White cliffs coming to a raging sea
Riptide’s gonna push the life of me
I’m gonna miss you
I’m gonna miss you
I’m gonna miss you
When you’re gone

Beachy Head
They’re not dead
They saw the waves below
That’s no way to go

Beachy Head

Overall Meaning

is a song by the British band Veronica Falls that deals with the topic of suicide. The song's lyrics describe the cliffs of Beachy Head, a well-known suicide spot in England, where people have jumped to their deaths in the past. The opening lines “White cliffs coming to a raging sea, Riptide’s gonna push the life out of me” give the listener an idea of the singer's frame of mind. The riptide is a metaphor for the overwhelming emotions that can push someone to take the extreme step of ending their life.

Veronica Falls mentions the people who committed suicide at Beachy Head by saying, “They’re not dead, they saw the waves below, that’s no way to go.” The lyricist is reminding everyone of the tragic reality of suicide, that the people who took their lives never got to enjoy another day, and that there is no glory in such a death. The song's sadness is captured in the closing lines “I’m gonna miss you when you’re gone,” which can apply to both those who are left behind by suicide and to someone who is about to embark on this final journey.

The topic of suicide is not often discussed openly in popular music, and Beachy Head is an example of a rare and sensitive treatment of this serious subject. Veronica Falls's use of metaphors, powerful imagery, and emotional depth make this song a poignant reflection on suicide.

Veronica Falls were such a great band... all four members were so great at making really good music. Shall be one of these people who will always listen to their music (however length of time passes by) as around the same age/generation to them. Utmost respect to them in their legacy of music :)

Christian M. Lombardo

Discovered them in 2016. One of my favorites of all time. Bought both of their albums. I love them all, but I have the biggest crush on the lead singer! Check out Patience - White of an Eye.

@Christian M. Lombardo Discovered them after you and happen to be British! Shows how underrated they were. Also am with you, on them being favourites and have listened to both albums, B-Sides (the lot) and they're top draw! Also have man crush on her, so cute and have already checked out her solo work. Very good looking woman, also around the same age to myself as were the band lol and very talented musicians all round. The band deserves a lot of respect from the world :)

this is the best, new original sounding stuff i've heard in awhile. it's not like the other hipster indie bands at all. the harmonies are very beach boys/mama and the papa's-esque. i've fallen in love with the new album... o, and graveyards!

William Payne

The amount of times that I've gone to Beachy Head in the dead of night or the early hours just to stand on the edge and look over the sea or up at the stars and down on to Eastbourne. It's one of my favourite contemplantive spaces. It's a perfect illustration of nature's simultaneous macabre and picturesque beauty. There's also a shitty pub.
