Ion Square
Bloc Party Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ion square, perspex swings
I breathe out, you breathe in
Permanent midnight
Our love, our love
How we've come to depend
On each other to the end
The space between us has disappeared
You finish my, you finish my words for me

I remember how it began
So many great days in a row
Barefoot on Bishopsgate
Trying to find Blake's grave
If we could stay like this in a silver foil
Trapped in amber for a life
Permanent midnight
Our love, our love

[Chorus]
I carry your heart here with me
I carry it in my heart
I carry your heart with me
I carry it in my heart

Who said unbroken happiness
Is a bore, is a bore?
Who said it, my love? I don't mind it
Anymore, anymore
And I reach out a hand over your side of the bed
Pull that blanket over your shoulders exposed to the night
And the hunger of those early years will never return
But I don't mind, I don't mind
Cause I love my mind when I'm fucking you
Slowed down to a crawl
Years of crime and the bread line
Have not at all dimmed your shine
So let's stay in, let the sofa be our car
Let's stay in, let the TV be our stars
I found my dancing shoes but they don't fit
All the bright lights do is bore me
They bore me

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

"Ion Square" by Bloc Party is a song about the deep connection and love that the singer shares with his partner. The lyrics refer to "ion square" and "perspex swings," which seems to represent the cyclical, repetitive nature of the human experience. The two people breathe in and out together, completely in sync and dependent on each other, with the space between them disappearing. The love they share is unbreakable and lasts forever, even though they know that the early days of intense passion and excitement will never return.

The lyrics also allude to the idea of "permanent midnight," which suggests that the singer and his partner are trapped in a moment or a feeling that they cannot escape. In one section, the singer reminisces about their early days “barefoot on Bishopsgate, trying to find Blake's grave” and wishes they could stay like this, trapped in an amber for a life. He also asks who said unbroken happiness is a bore, indicating that he is content to be stuck in this constant state of love and devotion.

Overall, "Ion Square" is a celebration of a powerful love story that has endured through the years, and the singer revels in the simple pleasures of being together, even if they are just staying in and watching TV.

Hands up to all those who think that the official video of this song will always be needed

@SILVERONIN

Always

@riroo8275

This is the song that my then-boyfriend and I bonded over when we met. Now we're married and this has become our love song.

@hazchickgames2840

As much as I love this song, it just reminds me of bad teenage relationships and failing college/high-school because of them. I was a very different person then; broken and desperate for acceptance. 12 years on, married with 3 children... and sometimes I still don't feel as though I've fully recovered from those times.

The double-edged sword of music's ultimate power. One blade cuts and the other heals. Fuck.

@SILVERONIN

Understandable, music is a time machine for good and bad times

@jayb1621

The second verse is just pure magic. That crescendo. Into that wall of sound and then “All the bright lights they do is bore me” arrrrgh. I’m 48 years old and it makes me want to jump on my bed.

@lc3433

Ion Square and Different Drugs are two criminally underated songs.

@evelinboerner2160

I have nothing but love for this song. It's always grabbing me, touching my heart in places I thought didn't exist anymore, making me shout the chorus louder than Kele... And suddenly, I remember sitting in the middle of a crowded bus!

@Modeststroke

This is the greatest love song I've ever heard.  It does not dream of ideals, but rather adorns love after the luster has faded.
Purely brilliant!

@brisingerfaelorn

It's not a bad song but for amazing love lyrics, listen to In An! by the Devin Townsend Project. It actually made me and my gf cry as the lyrics summed up how we both felt perfectly.
