Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whoa whoy yeah yeah yeah my bredren
You've got to know yourself

In a dis ya time
Man you have the mind
You get carry away by captivity
Carry away by captivity.
In a dis ya time

How do dem say dem sell Jah
For thirty pieces of Silva
Jah Jah live forever
Him a go come with lightening and thunder
In a dis ya time

Any one can tell a lie
But the truth reveal itself
All you a go say that you love Jah Jah
Yet y'all fight tribal against ya brother
In a dis ya time
In a dis ya time

You lie and knew what you wanna know
Some son he got to take a blow
Mon have to know himself don't you know
Birds tangled by dem feet
Man a go tangled by dem toungue
So it was written
So it must be done
In a dis ya time
In a dis ya time
In a dis ya time
In a dis ya time

All you a go say that you love...

Overall Meaning

The Itals's song "Ina Dis a Time" is a reggae track that encourages listeners to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the society in which they live. The lyrics highlight the negative impact of captivity on the mind and the importance of seeking truth and self-knowledge despite the challenges of the current time.

The opening lyrics, "You've got to know yourself," serve as a call to action for listeners to engage in introspection and self-reflection. The following verses touch on the idea that people can become trapped by societal norms and expectations, leading them away from their true selves. The line "Carry away by captivity" suggests a loss of personal autonomy, while the repetition of "In a dis ya time" emphasizes the challenging nature of the present moment.

The song then moves on to critique the hypocrisy of those who claim to love Jah (God), yet engage in tribal conflict against others. The line "How do dem say dem sell Jah for thirty pieces of Silva" refers to the biblical story of Judas betraying Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, suggesting that those who engage in such hypocrisy are no better than Judas. The song concludes by urging listeners to seek truth and self-knowledge despite the challenges, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself.

Overall, "Ina Dis a Time" is a powerful call to action for listeners to resist the negative influence of captivity and seek truth and self-knowledge in a challenging societal context. Through its insightful lyrics and catchy reggae beat, the song inspires listeners to become agents of personal and social change.

Man, that line "how you a go say that you love Jah Jah, yet you a fight tribal 'gainst your brother" I first heard that in a song by Merciless (of all people) in the mid 90s ("How You a Go Say"). All these years later I find out the original! Beautiful, beautiful song.
