Chained
The xx Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I watched you breathe in
And I wished you'd stop
Only for long enough
Long enough

It's hard to say

Separate or combine
I ask you one last time
Did I hold you too tight?
Did I not let enough light in?

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

If a feeling appears
If your mind should sway
It's not a secret you should keep
I won't let you slip away

We used to be closer than this
We used to be closer than this
We used to get closer than this
Is it something you missed?

We used to be closer than this
We used to be closer than this
We used to get closer than this
Is it something you missed?

Winged or chained
I ask you would you have stayed
Did I hold you too tight?
Did I not let enough light in?

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of The xx's song Chained, the singer watches the person they care for breathe and wishes they would stop, even if only momentarily. The reason for this wish is not directly stated, but it could be interpreted in various ways. It could be seen as a longing for stillness or intimacy, or as a fear of losing the person. Following this contemplation, the singer asks if they should "Separate or combine," posing a question about the nature of their relationship. They then inquire if they were too restrictive or if they failed to provide enough "light" or freedom, suggesting a potential cause for any distance or tension that may exist.

As the song progresses, the chorus repeats the phrase "We used to be closer than this" four times, indicating the presence of changes or distance in the relationship. The singer wonders if there is something they missed or if there is someone or something else that stands between them. This section creates a sense of melancholy and a desire to reconnect or understand what actions or events led to a shift in their closeness.

The final verse poses the question of whether the person they care for feels "Winged or chained," once again alluding to the possibility of restriction or lack of freedom. The singer asks if the person wishes they had stayed, reflecting the fear of abandonment, and wonders if they were too controlling or failed to provide enough space for growth. The repetition of the "oooh" sounds at the end creates a sense of longing and unanswered questions, leaving the listener to contemplate the various interpretations of the lyrics.

To all the comments about indie VS pop music:

1. Indie fans: first off, I totally understand where you're coming from.

I hate the pop culture in general. But when I'm in a bubbly mood, I do enjoy some artists like Katy Perry and 5SOS, who write their own songs, can play instruments, and were discovered from church choir and Youtube covers. If you think about it, compared to the rest of today's pop artists (like Nicki Minaj and 1 Direction) that's pretty impressive to come a long way on their own. So I do believe not all pop is horrible.

2. Pop fans: I think if you listen to Ariana Grande or Selena Gomez or something like that, I won't agree that they're amazing, but I WILL advise you to get a taste of other music as well... like Indie!

I love post-hardcore, indie, punk rock, alternative, pop, country, soul, R&B, dream pop, rock....etc.
So I think these arguments are pretty useless :P there is no 'best genre'

:) just my opinion

2021... Still listening that amazing song, and the overall "Coexist" album. Coexist is a bit underrated imo, I really love that album : sensual voices, calm, still the xx typical mix of simple guitar notes and silence, and the touch of dubstep, very relevant on that one. A very good album that improves over time like a good wine.
