I'm Hurting Inside
Bob Marley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mm-mm-hm
I've been searchin' the whole darn day
For a little woman of mine - mine - mine - mine
Someone a-told me I could find her here,

But it seem she disappear
Said, I searched the whole darn day
Night is drawing nigh
I think I'd better go home
Try tomorrow again

But when I reached that railroad station,
I missed the last train,
And then it seemed like dewdrops
Gonna fall on me
Yes, it seem like teardrops
Gonna call on me now

I said, I'd better make up my mind
What am I gonna do
Am I gonna rest up here,
Or am I gonna push on through?

My mind say, "Hey, man, ya hit the road."
Down there I missed the track - track - track
I'm lost! Lord, I'm lost, eh!
Love is such a heavy load!

And then: for crying out loud, come back to me!
For crying out loud, hear my plea!
For crying out loud, come back to me!

Why do you treat me so bad?
Why do you treat me so bad?
Mm - mm - mm - mm - bam, bam
Bom, bom, bome, bome

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bob Marley & The Wailers's song "I'm Hurting Inside" describe the singer's search for his beloved woman. He has searched the whole day for her, as he was told she could be found there. However, it seems she's disappeared, and night is drawing near, so he decides to go home and try again tomorrow. But as he heads to the railway station to catch the last train, he misses it, and a stricken feeling comes over him, as if teardrops are about to fall. He contemplates what he should do now, whether to stay or move on, but he feels so lost because of the weight of love's burden, he appeals to his lover to return to him, wondering why she treats him so badly.

The song's lyrics "I'm Hurting Inside" convey the emotion of heartbreak and loneliness that comes with being separated or rejected by one's loved one. The song questions the reason why the singer is being treated badly, and how these actions of neglect confuse their love. The theme of the song addresses the idea that love can have a heavy load and that love can consume an individual.

Oh-a-w-oh
When i was just a little child
(Little child)
Happiness was there awhile
(There awhile)
And from me, it...
It slipped one day (ay)
Happiness
Come back I say

Cause if you don't come
I've got to go looking...
For happiness

Well if you don't come
I've got to go looking...
God, for happiness... happiness

Say that
Say i'm hurting
(Inside) and its no...
I'm hurting
I'm hurting
Deep inside

Oh good god now

Oh hear my cry
Hear my cry
Yeah my my my my my my my cry

Been together like school children
(School children)
Then you hurt me just in vain
(Just in vain)
Oh...
Lord, i'm your little child
(Little child)
Oh
Happiness come back awhile

Cause if you don't come
I'm go'ng a looking
For happiness
The road is dangerous

Cause if you don't come
I've got to go looking
For happiness... happiness

Said I'm...
Don't you know i'm...
I'm hurting, hurting inside

Oh i'm hurting

Who cares
Who cares

Does the one who love
Oh
Feel the pain
Feel the pain

Does the one who love
Feel the pain
Feel the pain

Been together like school children

They say "don't ever meet your heroes, or you will be dissappointed". I met Bob. The man was every bit as wonderful as you might dream. I will never forget the look of love and pure acceptence in his eyes as he caught me crashing his party.

Bob is probably the best musician of all time, his understanding and lyrics touch us all regardless of race or social standing. His songs are like messages to us all, that if we understand them make us better people. He seems to connect with us all and his songs reflect every part of what it's like to be human, all the good and bad parts explained in lyrics that we can all understand.
