There's More to Life Than This
Björk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come on girl
Let's sneak out of this party
It's getting boring
There's more to life than this

It's still early morning
We could go down to the harbor
And jump between the boats
And see the sun come up

We could nick a boat
And sneak off to this island
I could bring my little ghetto blaster
There's more to life than this

But then we'd have to rush back
To the town's best baker
To get the first bread of the morning
There's more to life than this

There's more to life than this
There's more to life than this
There's more to life than this
There's more to life than this

Overall Meaning

Björk’s song “There’s More to Life Than This” is a lofty ode to living life outside the lines. She calls out a then mundane party, inviting her friend to sneak away from it, noting that there’s “more to life than this”. This statement can be interpreted as a call to action or awakening, an urging to step out of a routine and embrace the world around us with intentionality. The song then takes on a wanderlust nature, with the two friends jumping between boats and watching the sunrise. The image is free, raw and untethered, perfectly capturing the freedom of will that Björk is urging in her listeners.

The song then takes an interesting turn as Björk adds in that they could nick a boat and sneak off to an island, bringing her little ghetto blaster with them. This image is clearly a nod to the non-conformist nature of the song, urging listeners to not only break away from the mundane but truly forge a path of their own. However, she punctuates this image by mentioning they would have to rush back to the town’s best baker to get the first bread of the morning, reminding the audience that there is always a pull to our routines and familiarities but sometimes it takes some risk-taking to truly break free.

Overall, the song is a light and buoyant anthem to non-conformity, urging the listener to take risks and embrace the world in its fullness. It’s a reminder that there is more to life than the day-to-day grind, as long as we are willing to take the first step.

"There's More to Life Than This", the fourth track on Björk's 1993 album Debut, was recorded live in the toilets of the Milk Bar clubnight, London.

@damagedcatdad

so was she just singing along to the beat the club was playing? or was this arranged?

@creekalmighty

@James Goree arranged

@k-leb4671

@James Goree They basically just played back the whole instrumental track on the club's speakers. Bjork's vocals seem to have actually been sung live there, with a recording set-up good enough that they could also isolate her vocals for use in the non-toilet mix.

I defenitely relate to the urgent feeling of leaving a party full of boring people in order to do more important things in life like jumping between boats and then getting the first bread in the morning

@Xboxbob11
