Say Please
Monsters of Folk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everyone grows old on the gold coast
It takes a lot of hope to grieve
Everyone gets dark and the worst part
Is the way those thoughts can please you
Personality like a split screen
See yourself down your knees

Hold out your hand
Hold out your hand, darling
Hold out your hand
Say please

Everyone gives up down on hard luck
On hope ain't enough it seems
Everyone gets lost in their own fog
Have to wonder on with lantern dreams

Say please, please
Just say something
Speak up, please
If its what you're looking for

Hold out your hand
Hold out your hand, darling
Hold out your hand
Say please
Say please

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song "Everyone grows old on the gold coast" suggests that everyone goes through the ageing process, even those who live in the affluent Gold Coast, a popular tourist destination in Australia. However, the second line "It takes a lot of hope to grieve" is more complex as the idea of grieving usually implies that one has lost something or someone, and hope might not seem to be the emotion that coincides with the grieving process. Perhaps, the lyrics address the idea that holding on to hope in the midst of pain will help one grieve more effectively.

The lyrics "Everyone gets dark and the worst part is the way those thoughts can please you" further explore how thoughts can be deceptive and dangerous. When people have dark thoughts, the fact that these thoughts bring them a certain degree of pleasure can be alarming, and it is precisely this perverse pleasure that keeps them trapped. The lyrics that follow show that life can be a split screen with a dual personality, and this dichotomy can cause one's downfall. The phrase "See yourself down on your knees" exemplifies the moment of complete submission, when one realizes that their darker thoughts have taken over, and they have become powerless in the face of their own mind.

The chorus "Hold out your hand Say please" can be interpreted as an invitation to be helped by another person. No one can navigate life alone, and the phrase "Say please, please Just say something Speak up, please If it's what you're looking for" implies that sometimes people are afraid to ask for help even when they desperately want it. The song ends the way it began, with the "Hold out your hand" repeated. The repetition highlights the importance of reaching out and asking for help when it is needed.

Mike Mogis needs more love, man! Of course Oberst, James and Ward are fantastic - but Mogis is seriously amazing in his own (albeit man-of-few-words) way.
