K
BUMP OF CHICKEN Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song "K" by BUMP OF CHICKEN is a touching tale about a black cat that has been shunned by society and how it finds warmth and love in an unlikely place. The lyrics describe how the cat is used to being alone and has never cared for anyone but itself. However, one day a young painter picks up the cat and takes it home, where he feeds it and gives it a warm place to sleep. The cat, unused to such kindness, struggles and scratches at the painter, trying to escape from the unfamiliar sensation of warmth. But as time passes and the black cat becomes more comfortable, it starts to lean on the painter's arm and cuddle up to him. In return, the painter gives the cat a name – "Kuroki Sachi" – and paints the images of the cat in his sketchbook. The painter and the black cat spend many winters together, until one day the painter falls ill and leaves a letter asking the cat to deliver it to his girlfriend. The black cat, knowing that the painter has always been its friend, runs through the snow to deliver the letter, knowing that it is the only way to pay back the love that has been given to it.

The second part of the song tells how the black cat, after delivering the letter and burying the painter's name plate in the garden, finds itself being chased and stoned by children, who call it names and mock it. However, the cat refuses to give up and runs all the way to the painter's hometown, to fulfill the last promise that the painter made before he died. Despite being battered and bloodied by the time it arrives, the black cat continues to run, overcoming all the obstacles in its path until it reaches the house of the painter's lover. The lover reads the letter, which contains the last words of the painter and a message of love for his girlfriend. In the end, the black cat, having fulfilled its mission and paying back the painter's kindness, dies in the garden and is buried beside the painter.

I just randomly remembered this after years since the last time I heard it. I forgot that the last bit manages to squeeze a few tears outta me

I saw this for the first time when my teacher played it in Japanese class. I was this close to crying in the middle of the class. I still tear up a bit every time I watch the video again.

Oh man it's been a couple years since I listened to this....but it still hits me just as hard. It's one of the greatest songs ever IMO :D

I had a black cat named Lucy, she hated me, I loved her. She ran away because she felt unsafe, I cried and prayed she would come back, she never did. We moved away to another house, my friend lived where we used to, she told me. She saw Lucy trying to look for me, where I used to always hold her and play. I MISS HER!

the emotion that the singer puts is incredible
