0:34 What's interesting to note is that Kili and also, probably, Fili are both not singing. This is probably because, as far as the books go anyway, they were only born after the Lonely Mountain was lost. Because of that, they probably never understood, growing up, why the loss of the Lonely Mountain was such a big deal. But now, they finally understand after hearing the pain and heartbreak in the voices of Dwarven elders like Balin, Dwalin, and Thorin, people who were actually there when Erebor fell, as they sing this painful song. Because of the guilt Fili and Kili feel for not appreciating the depth of this Dwarven pain in the past, they probably felt like they didn't have the right to sing with the others.

i think they were humming, actually! about half of the dwarves, i think, hummed throughout the entire thing. you'll note that bofur is singing, and i'm fairly certain he's a born-and-bred blue mountains dwarf - in the books, all that's ever mentioned of his heritage is that he's descended from the dwarves of moria, but he never speaks of erebor like it's a place he or his family personally knows. in the movies i think it's explicitly said (by the actors, if not within the movies themselves) that he's from the blue mountains.
not only that, but with the way the others all join in on the song, i'd wager it's one that's fairly well known, at least in the places where refugees from erebor settled, so this wouldn't be the first time fíli and kíli have heard it. if you ask me, i think who hums and who sings is more a matter of habit, sorta like how a lot of people will always sing a certain part of a duet or always do the back-up vocals. as an example, there's an old country/folk song that my family sang a lot when i was younger, and somehow i fell into the habit of always singing the back-up vocals and my parents would sing the lead, to the point that i didn't actually know what the lead vocals were for the longest time!
i think they very much understood the significance of the sacking of erebor, especially as they're surrounded by people who survived it. they lost a great-grandfather, grandfather, and uncle to a war fought in order to reclaim an ancestral home from an enemy the dwarves thought more manageable than a dragon. their other uncle and their own mother were survivors of the dragon's attack, and spent a good portion of their younger years as refugees.
sorry for the long response, i'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to tolkien's works 😅 however, the movies certainly took a lot of liberties, so your interpretation is just as valid as my book-based one (and a lot more meaningful, too!)
@TripleB-nb8en
Yeah I thought they were humming

God this is one of the most effective scenes is any movie. You feel their loss and regret through Tolkein’s perfect lyrics, the wonderful scoring of them by Howard Shore, and the brilliant vocal and facial performances by the cast. It all comes together to really put you where Bilbo stands - on the other side of the wall, feeling through their voices the old rage and longing that has now been quelled to one final hope - but you don’t know their pain yourself, you’re still on the other side of the wall hearing them thinking “By Eru, that must have been awful.” And the added voices that join in at “The pines were roaring” is killer - gives you the impression that the dwarves who were there and saw it joined the singing at that point. Not all of them care much about the gold, but the desolation - that they care about.

This song is so beautiful not just in the way it was directed and composed, but in the way it shows just how important this journey is to the Dwarfs and their people.
@Afalstein
The scene itself is framed wonderfully. The way all of the dwarves get into it, singing softly, how even the tough Dwalin is affected, the way Gloin is staring off wistfully. It gives real emotion to it, you really do get the sense of loss these dwarves feel, of the glory and wealth that's just a memory for them.
@crono900yuy7
My opinion is, the scene is great. I wish they had full lyrics from the book, and an adventuress dream sequence of some kind for Bilbo to show the full effect it had on him. It would have help transition to the morning scene better. I think the live action did not give a hobbit enough feeling to leave home. I miss the Green Dragon scene in the book.

This song is so much suggestive because it has some kind of ancestral feeling to it,the gloomy chants,the solemn tones,the unsettling lyrics,it creates a dark atmosphere and conveys an enormous feeling of despair,hopelessness and existential dread,all of this just shows how powerful music trully is and the reason why it has always been one of the hallmarks of humanity,there are some concepts,some sensations that can't be communicated or explained logically,there are some feelings rooted deep within the human psyche that can't be comprehended but only perceived,tens of centuries ago,our ancestors probably used to sing along together around a campfire before going for a hunting trip and I can't help but think that this behavioural heritage somehow still persists within us,even if we no longer live in the wild and have settled ourselves apart from it.

Mood is a very important factor in a movie. These dwarfs, some of whom had seen and lived in Erebor, and some who had only heard stories, are going to embark on the greatest quest their people ever committed to, in the morning. The night before would rightly have a lot of tension. They would feel enormous pressure, and for Thorin and Balin, simply beginning this journey would evoke powerful emotions and memories.

"As they sang the hobbit felt the love of beautiful things made by hands and by cunning and by magic moving through him, a fierce and a jealous love, the desire of the hearts of dwarves. Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick. He looked out of the window. The stars were out in a dark sky above the trees. He thought of the jewels of the dwarves shining in dark caverns. Suddenly in the wood beyond The Water a flame leapt up—probably somebody lighting a wood-fire—and he thought of plundering dragons settling on his quiet Hill and kindling it all to flames.
He shuddered; and very quickly he was plain Mr. Baggins of Bag-End, Under-Hill, again."

After watching the whole three movies and even lotr this scene really just means so much more than you think the first time you see it
@mau3304
I remember when I was young I was allowed to go to this movie and my dad would even encourage me to. I had never been in contact with Tolkien's world and when we sat there in the dark of the theater in the beginning of the movie, knowing that it would last mind-blowing 3 hours - when I was younger this movie and time in general were more enduring. Seeing Hobbiton for the first time was beautiful, but when the dwarves and Gandalf came to reveal the upcoming quest the movie was just a movie. When this scene came up it broke the fourth wall for me as a kid, you truly felt connected and empathetic for these dwarves that had just appeared to be some douches. Hearing them sing this earnest was not only making you feel that this would become a serious adventure, but I also - to this day - remember the spiritual impact of seeing these close-up shots of everyone, especially Thorin, and them just smoking for themselves with the smoke climbing and the warm red light in the hut, the atmosphere was just mystical. I think when this scene appeared no one was thinking something outside of this movies' world, in the way you sometimes zoom out when in theater and think about the people around you for example. No movie to this day sucked me into its' world at the very beginning like this one. This scene today reminds me of smoking marijuana for one of the first times with some people sitting around, just by the way it is designed.
@shaynatemple6458
I was 13 when this movie came out. I remembered this scene so vividly it gave me chills. Every blue moon I randomly sing this and I watch the movies all over again.
@fireflake6877
There is something so magical about the song
@emperornapoleon6204
I’m back after reading the first chapter of the hobbit again tonight! I just couldn’t rest my head for the night without listening to this scene from the movie again. What a legendary tale by the equally legendary Mr. Tolkien!
@ThePa1riot
The song is great but I also love the context of the scene itself. After we see the dwarves all jolly and playful they suddenly switch tunes to this somber hymn.
@key2laif
And the look on their faces , deep sadness and anger..
@pyrrhusofepirus8491
This is hands down, honest the best scene in all the three movies, long after I’d watched it this was one of the few scenes I actually remembered, like another said there is magic in this song
@AliciaDrawdy92
This song is the only thing that immediately calms my 1 month old baby girl. She stops crying and falls asleep quickly 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
@carterbrock3068
It's 2020 and this shit is still a gem 💎
@depressedandalone6851
ABSOLUTELY
@smok3y554
Rewatching everything after the rings of power series. Glad to have been alive for that. Me and my uncle who recently passed away were the only ones who loved the series among our close relatives, we used to watch together with his family. He always wished there were more films after the hobbit he couldnt stay for The rings of power. 😭 RIP
@commando6683
This is the best scene in the entire Hobbit trilogy
@MetallicAddict15
I don't get that a lot of critics said it took the movie too long to take off, simply because there wasn't any action until the company leaves the Shire. I strongly disagree with that; in fact, I loved the scenes in the Shire because they were very faithful to the source material. This is probably my favorite scene out of the entire movie. The atmosphere in it is just overwhelming.
@CarrbearKidd
I very much agree with this.
@UberTheWolf
Exactly, besides if you think about it, it's good to have a slower paced beginning. Especially when it's the start of a six film epic.
@Mote141
Exactly this slow story telling is part pf the atmosphere in middle earth. The books are very slow as well, and Peter Jackson convertet this atmosphere very good on screen. I really dont get most of peoples critics: the first hobbit is to slow, the secnd one to fast... simply enjoy this great fantasy epic!
@SirConto
I think they pretty much ruined the series latter on when they tried to make every scene packed with action and intense as possible. At some point, they just started getting retarded. In the book, the dwarves managed to escape the elven halls in barrels. They did it sneakily. It was a smart move. In the movies, the elves found them out and they chased them. And then a group of orcs appeared and started chasing them as well and then they made a scene with dwarves cutting down orcs from their barrels while orcs and elves are trying to shoot each other on each side,... And good lord what have they done with "Bard takes his bow and shoots the dragon in the heart with it".
Also with all the action they packed into the movie, they still got hardly any characterization or character development in. 3 long movies, and characters still looked like 3 year olds shouting at each other.
A slow paced movie series, like some of the old Akira Kirasawa's for example would've worked way better. Still, they opted to go for a typical Hollywood action movie (especially in later parts) - a worthless piece of drivel with little to no artistic value. In a way I understand their decision - action movies are safe and they bring money guaranteed. But it's definitely a massive lost opportunity to make the movies as much of a classics as the book was - like they kinda managed to do with LoTR.
@tomburgess8485
Doesn’t save the film from the some three hours of filler

@caphyre0019
No matter how many times i rewatch this, it always makes me sad in a nostalgic kinda way 😢 it's so good tho!!
@unguided_2275
This movie forever implant in my memory as this is the 1st and last movie me and my dad saw together just the 2 of us.
It's 1st time he ask if I want to see this, and usually it's with the whole family but that time it's just the 2 of us.
@idonotexist2619
One of the most amazing & incredible songs EVER!! It's like, you wish it was a little bit longer but, on the other hand, you know it's perfect the way it is
@burhan2388
one of the coolest scene I have ever seen
@tSp289
I wish Toilkien could have seen this. I'm kind of glad he didn't see all of Peter Jackson's films - some parts would likely have had him fuming, but this scene is near perfect.
@moatrboat
+tSp289 This is probably the best scene of all 3 films.
@tSp289
+Rainn M It's the onyl scene that really resonated with my memory of the book. The Hobbit was my absolute favourite as a kid, and the reason for that is it was SO atmospheric. This scene completely nailed it. I just don't understand why they had to ruin it with all the goblin town/barrels/giant furnace scenes.
@jongetitdunn
Tolkien wasn’t actually a big one when it came to effects of modern industry, including cinema. With that being said, I think he’d be pissed off that his books had movie adaptations.
@flaviapetrorossidefigueire6044
Jon GetitDunn yeah cuz he was born in another time, so he wasn’t familiar with that stuff, he would probably find it weird, but I guess after the shock he would be touched by this
@jongetitdunn
Flavia Petrorossi De Figueiredo Can’t argue that point. However, he was one of those people who appreciated nature more than the industrial inventions that man has made, such as the cinema.

❤️Thanks for the unending love and support you have consistently been showing me. I can’t appreciate the unconditional I’ve gotten from you, which has inspired me to give more sensational entertainment. I’m forever grateful. What country are you watching from?

Beautiful. This accurately adapts how Tolkien describes the Dwarves singing with deep voices.

not only is bofur’s voice went above the other on his part, but you can also see his face and only the mouth moving, his top face and eyes looks like he is reimagining it.
@titanrahlgaming
What I love most is there is no annoying instruments. Just just humming and deep pitchs :)

Maybe it's your ancient ancestors' blood resonating with it. We used to huddle around fires and sing odes to great deeds. Times long gone, set, nearly forgotten, today.
