RM Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seoul, Seoul

I love you, Seoul
I hate you, Seoul
I love you, Seoul
I hate you, Seoul (Seoul)

(I love ya'll) I love you, Seoul
I hate you, Seoul
I love you, Seoul
I hate you, Seoul (Seoul)

I love you, Seoul (I love you, Seoul)
I hate you, Seoul
I love you, Seoul (I love you, Seoul)
I hate you, Seoul (Seoul)

I'm leavin' you
I'm livin' you
I'm leavin' you
I'm livin' you
I'm leavin' you
I'm livin' you
I'm leavin' you
I'm livin' you
Seoul

I love you, Seoul
I hate you, Seoul
I love you, Seoul
I hate you, Seoul

I love you, Seoul
I hate you, Seoul
I love you, Seoul
I hate you, Seoul

Seoul (yeah)
I love you, Seoul (yeah)
I hate you, Seoul (yeah)
I love you, Seoul (yeah)
I hate you, Seoul

Overall Meaning

The song "Seoul" by RM is an ode to the city in which he was born and raised. The lyrics describe the city as familiar yet overwhelming, with its towering buildings and constant traffic. He questions the meaning behind the similarity in pronunciation between "Seoul" and "soul" and ponders the soul of the city. While he loves and hates different aspects of Seoul, he acknowledges that he cannot leave it behind because it is his home, and even the negative aspects of the city have a place in his heart.

The repeated refrain of "사랑과 미움이 같은 말이면" (If love and hate are the same words) reflects RM's complex emotions towards Seoul. The verses depict the city's various characteristics and landmarks, from the constantly changing scenery seen from a bus to the "cold parks" that pretend to be warm. RM reflects on his own life in the city, with memories of his youth seeming distant and unreachable. Despite the struggles and frustrations that come with living in a city like Seoul, he still loves it.

Through his lyrics, RM has created a love letter to the city of Seoul with all its beauty and flaws. He acknowledges the contradictions and complexities of the city but emphasizes the bond he has with Seoul as his home.

RM ("Real Me"; previously known as "Rap Monster") is a "GIFTED CHILD", since he has an IQ of 148. He scored in the top 1% of the simulated CSAT ("Korean college entrance exam"). He got into 1,3% best nationwide when he was a freshman in high school (Korean language, math, foreign language, social studies). He self-studied English in middle school and scored 850 on his first TOEIC ("Test of English for International Communication") and 797 on the TEPS ("Test of English Proficiency"). His English teacher was the sitcom "Friends". He is fluent in KOREAN, ENGLISH and JAPANESE + he studies Chinese.

RM was the company’s FIRST MALE TRAINEE, and the first person to move into Big Hit Entertainment’s first-ever dorms in 2010.

AS THE LEADER OF BTS, he has lots of responsibilities, including resolving conflicts between team members and Big Hit, OR just between team members. He needs to represent both the group and the company. He makes sure that "the boys" stay united and focused on their performance. He is expected to give greetings first and to deliver award acceptance speeches. He is known for his moving speeches, e.g. at the United Nations or BBMAs. He is also in the position of taking the blame in many situations.

RM was active in the underground Korean hip-hop scene under the names "RUNCH RANDA", "LARGO", "THE NEXIST", and "STEALO", until he became the first member of BTS in 2010. RM made a difficult decision to stay in BTS. His peers looked down on him for "not resisting temptation"/ "betraying hip-hop" (e.g. B-Free), and the K-pop fans look(-ed) down on him for not "fitting into" the Korean beauty standards.

In his DEBUT MIXTAPE "RM" (March 17, 2015), RM talks about his IDENTITY STRUGGLES and responds to his critics. (RM: "I wanted to express the thought of, "There are this many sides inside of me, but in the end, this is me, and you who’s listening to this is just you too."")

RM'S SECOND (FREE) MIXTAPE "MONO (Oct 23, 2018)" is the highest charting album by a Korean soloist on BB200 at #26 with 3 days of tracking with 16K Pure and 21K Untis. RM's "mono" has topped iTunes album chart in 91 countries. (DJBOOTH: "It features fleshed out ideas of solitude, depression, and the search for meaning that were teased on tracks like “Adrift” on RM.")

RM won the "BEST MALE SOLO" category at the 14th Annual Soompi Awards.

While with Big Hit, RM wrote songs for Korean girl group Glam, like their hit "Party (XXO)" that is explicit about sexuality and same-sex love; and has produced and written songs for BTS at his studio, "RKive" (former "Mon Studio"). (Billboard: "Party (XXO) is one of the most forward-thinking songs out of a K-pop girl group in the past decade.")

KOMCA ("Korean Music Copyright Association"): "Domestic every day and the total number of works registered is currently about …(136)". (His pre-debut songs and songs from his debut mixtape are NOT registered).

RM is known for his EXTENSIVE USE OF WORDPLAY and ability to rap to diverse and complex beats. (Dennis of kpopstups: "I always like to refer to this song ("Joke"), which is, in my opinion, the best rapping any Korean idol has ever done. He raps really fast while changing up his flow and rhyme patterns every two to four bars.")

Several media described RM as "the philosopher who raps", "a wizard of songwriting and composing", "a K-pop icon and hip-hop legend" and "a rapid-fire lateral thinker who can whisk you on the mental equivalent of a gigantic wood-track rollercoaster".

RM has collaborated with many artists, including the WESTERN ARTISTS listed below:
- Lil Nas X (Seoul Town Road)
- Juice WRLD (& Suga) (All Night)
- HONNE & BEKA (Crying Over You)
- Steve Aoki (& Jungkook, Jimin) (Waste It on Me)
- HONNE (Seoul)
- Fall Out Boy (Champion Remix)
- Wale (Change)
- Mandy Ventrice (Fantastic)
- Krizz Kaliko (Rush)
- Warren G (P.D.D. – aka Please Don’t Die).

On Aug 22, 2019, RM extends his record for "THE MOST MONTHLY LISTENERS ON SPOTIFY" for a Korean soloist with 7,849,965 (449th in the world). On Sep 4, 2019, RM is "3RD MOST FOLLOWED KOREAN SOLOIST ON SPOTIFY" with 1,274,541 followers.

RM broke several SPOTIFY RECORDS (thanks to "Seoul Town Road" & "seoul"):
- the 1st Korean soloist who had multiple entries on the Global Top 200 chart;
- the highest entry for a Korean soloist on the Global Top 200 chart (#114);
- the biggest debut day for a Korean soloist (873,284 str/ams);
- the most monthly listeners (7,849,965).
