The lyrics of Kaiser Chiefs’ “Ruby” are somewhat enigmatic but the singer seems to be expressing his love for a woman named Ruby. He stresses that he is not bothered by anything else occupying his head except her, and hence, romance is not dead. He emphasises that Ruby has a hold on him and a simple mention of her name makes his heart skip a beat. In the second half of the song, it becomes evident that the singer has some misgivings about his relationship with Ruby. In the lines “Could it be that you’re joking with me and you don’t really see you with me?” he suggests that there may be a misunderstanding between him and Ruby as to where their relationship is headed. The final lines seem to conclude the confusion, indicating perhaps that the singer is still in love with Ruby, but unsure about where it’s headed.
"Ruby" was released by the British indie rock band Kaiser Chiefs, in 2007. It entered the UK Singles Chart at number one on February 25, 2007, and remained on the chart for 26 weeks, thus becoming the band’s first number-one alarm. The song's success propelled their album Yours Truly, Angry Mob to increased sales, eventually winning the Q Award for Best Album that year. With its catchy hook and sing-along chorus, this song cemented itself in chart-topping charts.
