Love Is Like a Violin
Ken Dodd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is like a violin
With its strings around your heart
Soft and sweet as dreams begin
Sadly crying when you part

Make my heart your violin
Play it now and tell me this
In the music of a kiss
Let me hear you say, "I love you"

Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo

Make my heart your violin
Play it now and tell me this
In the music of a kiss
Let me hear you say, "I love you"

Overall Meaning

Ken Dodd's song "Love Is Like a Violin" uses the analogy of a violin to describe the experience of falling in love. The first verse compares love to a violin, with its strings wrapped around the heart. The second line further explains, describing love as soft and sweet, like the sound of a violin playing a dreamy melody. However, the chorus reveals the melancholy side of love: after a breakup, the violin's strings cry out in sadness, much like a heartbroken lover.

The second verse reveals the singer's desire to have their beloved play their heart like a violin, using a kiss as the bows to create music that expresses their love. The imagery of making one's heart a violin is a poetic way to express the desire to be completely vulnerable and open to another person.

Overall, the song is a touching ode to the beauty and pain of love. Love is beautiful and sweet when it is present, but just like a violin, it can cause great sorrow when it is gone.
