Kill
Jimmy Eat World Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well you're just across the street
Looks a mile to my feet
I want to go to you
Funny how I'm nervous still
I've always been the easy kill
I guess I always will

Could it be that everything goes round by chance
Or only one way that it was always meant to be
You kill me, you always know the perfect thing to say
Hey hey, hey hey
I know what I should do but I just can't walk away

I can picture your face well
From the bar in my hotel
I wish I'd go to you
I'll pick up, put down the phone
Like your favorite Heatmeiser song goes
It's just like being alone

Oh god please don't tell me this has been in vain
I need answers for what all the waiting I've done means
You kill me, you've got some nerve but can't face your mistakes
Hey hey, hey hey
I know what I should do but I just can't turn away
(Away, away)

So go on love
Leave while there's still hope for escape
You gotta take what you can these days
There's so much ahead
And so much regret

I know what you want to say
I know it but can't help feeling differently
I loved you
And I should have said it
Tell me just what has it ever meant

I can't help it baby, this is who I am
Sorry but I can't just go turn off how I feel
You kill me, you build me up but just to watch me break
Hey hey, hey hey
I know what I should do but I just can't walk away

Overall Meaning

The song "Kill" by Jimmy Eat World is about unrequited love and the fear of rejection that comes with it. The singer is enamored with someone who is just across the street, but he is too nervous to approach them. He describes himself as an "easy kill," indicating that he is vulnerable and would be easily hurt by rejection. Despite this fear, he cannot help but be drawn to this person and is even familiar with their favorite Heatmiser song.

The lyrics suggest that he has been waiting for something to happen between them and is unsure if this prolonged waiting has been in vain. He pleads for answers and acknowledges that this person has the power to "kill" him with their words, yet he cannot turn away or ignore his emotions. The bridge of the song is particularly poignant, as the singer acknowledges that he should have told this person that he loved them, but now it may be too late.

The chorus of the song is both heartbreaking and empowering, as the singer declares that although he knows what he should do (walk away), he cannot bring himself to turn his back on this person. He recognizes that there is still hope for escape and the possibility of finding someone else, but he is admitting that he cannot do it alone.

Overall, "Kill" is a powerful and emotional song about the complexities of love and the fear of rejection. It strikes a chord with anyone who has ever loved someone who does not feel the same way.

I'm 67 years old, so I've heard some great music over the years. This is, in my opinion, the greatest break-up song ever. Rips your heart out with every verse, with the verses driving the narrative soul of the song. As do the 3 different choreses. An unususl song structurally, and just brilliant as it climaxes to the pleading "I can't help it baby, this is who I am..."

@rwesleyslaght111

spot on. an absolute masterpiece. The song and 23 are Jimmy Eat World's best songs in my opinion.

@sosaysthelegend

If you read his old blog posts it will make a lot of sense.

@leobrussel9471

@@sosaysthelegend I'm curious. Can you elaborate?

@gangster125

I guess it’s technically not a breakup song, but Fight Song by Appleseed Cast is up there for me

@leobrussel9471

@gangster125  Just listened to it. Good song. I don't think it's as good as Kill, but we all have our opinions.
How is that not a break-up song? Sure sounds like it to me.
