"Digital" was never the problem.
The sound of electronica in 2000 was primarily based on digital samplers and synthesisers. The problem with the sound now is everyone copies each other to an extreme degree, leading to an overload of blandness. Back then, there weren't ubiquitous online tutorials, you had to learn your craft through experimentation.

Not entirely true. while the gear was the same, the samples they were creating a lot of the time were created by analog synths which have a much warmer and unique sound, no two sounds are the same. Now, ALL the sounds come in sample packs created in labratories by sample junkies using software based synths, just not even close. Add to that we were all listening to this stuff on records, it's just a smoother, richer experience IMO. Still all fucking amazing to come back to and have the same feelings!
