Ghosting
Freelance Whales Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you ever play with kids in the basement
Soot upon your face so you were a hot mess
All your little molars cracked in the pressure
Come here little sister, let's get you to bed

But oh you caught me sleeping in the power sockets
You caught me mildew in the tiles of the bathroom
And oh you shot a glance like I was doing okay
Oh I am never on my way

Do you ever run with him in the morning
And think about jumping over the back fence
Seven different places need a bit of mending
All we use our eyes to fill in most the gaps

But oh you caught me sleeping in the power sockets
You caught me mildew in the tiles of the bathroom
And oh you shot a glance like I was doing okay
Oh I am never on my way

The reason my molars are so broken
Is I spend too much time ghosting
With the likes of you and yours

The reason my insides are so swollen
Is I spend too much time ghosting
With the likes of you and yours

The reason my molars are so broken
Is I spend too much time ghosting
With the likes of you and yours

The reason my insides are so swollen
Is I spend too much time ghosting
With the likes of you and yours

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Freelance Whales's "Ghosting" are mysterious and open to interpretation, but there appears to be a sense of both longing and dissatisfaction with one's inner life. The first verse seems to describe a moment of playing with children in a basement, where the singer is left feeling a bit disheveled and vulnerable. The line "All your little molars cracked in the pressure" may refer to how life's challenges have literally cracked and worn down the singer's teeth. The singer then reaches out to a little sister figure, perhaps to take care of her or find solace in her innocence.

However, the chorus repeats a sense of feeling caught in a state of stasis or decay. The line "You caught me sleeping in the power sockets" suggests that the singer has fallen into complacency or lethargy, while "You caught me mildew in the tiles of the bathroom" implies a sense of being trapped in a musty, decaying environment. The sudden shift to "Oh I am never on my way" is both melancholy and resigned, as if the singer has accepted that they are stuck in their current state.

The second verse continues this theme of being stuck, with the image of the singer running and considering jumping over a fence. This implies a desire to escape or break free, but the repetitive line "All we use our eyes to fill in most the gaps" suggests that the singer is resigned to simply viewing others' lives without taking any action to change their own. The chorus repeats again, this time with the admission that the singer spends too much time "ghosting" with others, implying that they are not fully present in their own life and instead living vicariously through others.

This song walked with me through eight long years of incarceration. I never skipped it when it shuffled in on my prison-issued mp3 player. It always calmed me and helped me recall the people who love me, the whole reason I was dragging myself through it day after day.

@Saubey

Their songs always make me think of a band of gnomes travelling through a forest, gathering people as they go and playing delightful music. In the best way.

This song takes me away. Wherever I am, no matter what mood I'm in, or what kind of day I've had, this song sweeps me off my feet and takes me into a world without words, just happy, peaceful, nothingness.

Wow. I had no idea Darren's brother was in this. I discovered their music while wandering around Fashion's Night Out, happening upon their unbelievable music in a store and wound up staying for what felt like hours. I also ran into my cousin's girlfriend, and found out her sister is marrying the drummer. Not only can I say that I love their music but when she introduced me to them they were so incredibly nice and talented and humble. Simply an amazing band, with amazing music. Enough said.
