My Favourite Things
Tony Bennett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzels with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eye lashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites, when the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad
Music

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eye lashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites, when the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tony Bennett's song "My Favorite Things" essentially list out items that make the singer happy and work as a sort of mental escape from the harsher realities of life. The opening verse discusses "raindrops on roses" and "whiskers on kittens," both of which are charming and sweet visuals that evoke positivity. The following lines highlight warm items like "bright copper kettles" and "warm woolen mittens", which indicate comfort and coziness. Brown paper packages with strings also represent the idea of surprises, alluding to the excitement of not knowing what's inside.

The second verse shifts focus to experiences, such as "doorbells" and "sleigh bells," which are both associated with joy and celebration. The mention of "schnitzel with noodles" implies that this is a favorite food item. The third line of this verse mentions "wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings," which conjures a peaceful and natural image.

The song then circles back to the original feelings of comfort with the mention of "cream colored ponies" and "crisp apple strudels." The final verse ends with the most poetic lines, referencing "silver white winters that melt into spring." This implies that while winter may be tough, the solace of seeing spring bloom can make the harshness of the colder season worth it. Ultimately, the song encourages the listener to focus on personal, small things that bring joy during difficult times.
