No Quarter
Tool Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lock all the doors and kill the lights
No one's coming home tonight
Sun beats down, don't you know?
All our lives are growing cold, oh
They bring news that must get through
Dying dreams in me and you
Oh, ooh
They're locked in a place where no one goes

We ask no quarter
We hold no quarter
Hey-oh

Lock the door
Kill the light
No one's coming home tonight

It's getting colder, it's getting colder
It's getting colder, it's getting colder
It's getting colder, it's getting colder
It's getting colder
Well, locked in a place where no one goes

Lock the door
Kill the light
No one's coming home tonight

They'll have news that must get through
Dying dreams in me and you, oh
Locked in a place where no one goes
They have no quarter
We have no quarter
We ask no quarter

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Tool's song "No Quarter" reflect a sense of despair and a feeling of being trapped. The lines "Lock the door, kill the light. No one's coming home tonight." create a sense of isolation and abandonment. The reference to the sun beating down and all our lives growing cold can be interpreted as a warning of the impending doom that awaits.

The lines "They bring news that must get through. To build a dream for me and you." suggest a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. The singer may be referring to messengers who bring news of a better future, a dream for a better life. However, the repetition of "Locked in a place where no one goes" implies that the hope is faint and fleeting.

Overall, the lyrics in "No Quarter" convey a sense of desperation and helplessness, coupled with a hint of longing for a better life. The song's themes of isolation, despair, and hopelessness resonate with many listeners and continue to be a staple in Tool's discography.

This is probably the best cover I've ever heard. Tool did an outstanding job of keeping this original by using the same lyrics and riffs while injecting their own style with complexity and a heavier sound they are known for. When you hear the cover, you know its a cover by the lyrics and riffs but you know by the sound that it is a Tool song. That is exactly what you want in a cover. Just felt like I needed to say that...

Sarah Rogers

+Lets.....Negotiate try listening to the Godsmack remake of Good Times Bad Times, it's spot on and the best remake of any LZ song to date imo, from the drums to the guitar and Sully belting it out beautifully.

historyspeaks 2016 Ugh....no. I'll stick with Tool.
