"I Remember Clifford" is an instrumental jazz threnody written by jazz tenor saxophonist Benny Golson in memory of Clifford Brown, the influential and highly regarded jazz trumpeter who died in an auto accident at the age of 25. Brown and Golson had done a stint in Lionel Hampton's band together. The original recording was by Donald Byrd in January 1957.[1]
Arturo Sandoval recorded the album I Remember Clifford as a tribute to Brown, who was a great influence on Sandoval; it features Golson's tune.

Used to work in a jazz club in Paris as a bartender. It was a tough time personally, I had a day job too, and my personal life was kind of a ruin. The bar would be empty when the concert was on, but I could hear just fine. When the band played this, tears gushed out of my eyes and I crumbled, and silently sobbed my heart out alone.. It helped me heal.

It's still such a tragedy that so many of the great jazz trumpet giants died way too early. Clifford Brown at 25 in a car accident, Lee Morgan shot and killed by his wife at 33, Bix dying from alcohol at 28, Chet Baker losing so many years to his addictions, even Bill Chase dying in a plane crash at 39.

@@markbridwell8972 I'm gonna be that guy and say this was written by Benny Golson. Clifford Brown was a good friend of Golson's and while I'm not sure if Lee Morgan ever met him he was a major influence on Morgan's style.

I know the feeling. I didn't find out about Sonny Clark, who composed and played piano in a lot of these bands, until pretty late in life. Whoever was doing A & R at Blue Note in the fifties and sixties really knew their stuff. Riverside Records, too.

This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've heard in 64 years of listening. Benny Golson was a brilliant composer and saxophonist and his genius included having Lee Morgan play it because he broke the mold and made it eternal. I have loved Lee's version of this for fifty plus years now, and it is in my top ten songs of importance , and lucky me, at the Django Reinhardt Festival at Samois sur Seine, near Paris France, about ten years ago, I got to shake hands with Benny Golson, who wrote this lovely piece. This world is packed with enough beauty, talent, and amazing music to keep each one of us happy, challenged, and inspired for a lifetime yet the mass media constantly focus on the thing that depress us, frighten us and divide us. Well ,I've switched them off for over a year now and watch and listen to YouTube instead and im so much more content and happy with with my lot in life. Music like this reminds me of the great heights people can sore to when they're allowed wouldn't it be great if all the mass media were to shut the f up for a day and just play wonderful music instead.

Clifford Brown was his teacher as well as being considered the OG Hard Bop trumpeter, Morgan is most likely exhibiting some of the techniques Clifford taught him before his untimely death.

Just heard an Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' recording of this yesterday while streaming Pandora for music related to the artist Branford Marsalis.
Anyway, this struck me as a remarkably beautiful, somber piece. However, it sounded just slightly celebratory. Not until reading the comments herein do I realize that this was apparently a tribute to the trumpeter Clifford Brown. I'm only passingly familiar with Clifford, so I shall look into him a bit now. Anyway, I can only wish to live such a life that inspires someone to compose and perform a musical piece as beautiful as this.

Clifford Brown is celebrated briefly but very movingly in Ken Burns' Jazz series. He was destined to be remembered as one of the handful of greatest trumpeters ever (i.e. on par with Dizzy, Miles, Satchmo) before the car accident that killed all on board, driving overnight to make an engagement in Chicago. He was, besides his genius on his instrument, a beacon in that he didn't drink or do drugs, which were decimating the jazz community.

Clifford was a big influence on young Lee Morgan, but he had the misfortune of letting his wife drive the car. Otherwise he'd probably have lived a very long and happy life, being a vice-free man.
