I'm Leaving It Up To You
Dale & Grace Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm leavin' it all up to you
To decide what you're gonna do
Now, do you want my love?
Or are we through?

That's why I'm leaving it up to you
To decide what you're gonna do
Now do you want my love?
Or are we through?

My heart in my hand
I, I, I don't understand
What have I, what have I done wrong?
You know I worship the ground you walk on

I'm leavin' it all up to you
To decide what you're gonna do
Now, do you want my love?
Or are we through?

Or are we through?
Or are we through?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I'm Leaving it Up to You" by Dale & Grace are about uncertainty in a relationship. The singer is asking their partner to make a decision about whether they want to stay together or not because they themselves are unsure of how their partner feels. The repeated line "I'm leaving it up to you" shows that the singer is relinquishing control and power in the relationship, putting the decision-making in the hands of the other person. The lyrics also suggest that the singer has put a lot of effort into the relationship and doesn't understand what they did wrong to cause this uncertainty.

The phrase "My heart in my hand" is significant because it portrays the vulnerability that the singer feels. They are showing their partner everything they have to offer, with no hidden agenda or motives. It’s almost as if they are saying: "Here, I am giving you all of me, now you decide if you want to keep me or not". The phrase “What have I done wrong?” shows that the singer is willing to take responsibility for their actions and wants to know what they did wrong so they can improve themselves and the relationship.

When me & my girlfriend was 17 she became pregnant, We were young & confused about what to do. One night we were talking what we should do & this song came on the radio. She looked at me & simply said I'm leaving it up to you. 53 years , 5 children, 5 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren later, we still look at each other and smile when we hear this song. God has Blessed us so much, & that song is still special.

My mom loved this song, she would sing it every time it was played on the radio, she went to the Lord almost two weeks ago, she'll be buried on Monday.
Mom, you gave birth to me and I love you very much for that, now, "I'll be leaving it up to you" when you'll call me home, until then, I'll miss you! 😔😥

I feel this. Sorry for your loss. My mother (72) is also why I listen to the golden oldies. Such a sweet melody.
