The One That Got Away
Jake Owen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She rolled in
My little sandy town
She spent the summer there
A couple houses down
Well it was magic in the air
When she caught my eye
We shared three short months
And one long goodbye

She was the one that got away
The one that wrecked my heart
I should've never let her go
I should've begged her to stay
She was the one that got away
Yeah, the one that got away

Well she kissed my lips
Down on Ocean Drive
She set my world on fire
On the fourth of July
We wrote our names in the sand
Under the star-soaked sky
But it washed away like she did
With the rising tide

She was the one that got away
The one that wrecked my heart
I should've never let her go
I should've begged her to stay
She was the one that got away, yeah

Now, every summer that rolls around
I'm looking over my shoulder
Wishing I could see her face
Wishing I could hold her

She was the one that got away (yeah, the one that got away)
The one who wrecked my heart (yeah, she wrecked my heart)
I should've never let her go
I should've begged her to stay
She was the one that got away, yeah

She was the one that got away (yeah, the one that got away)
Yeah, she wrecked my heart (yeah, she wrecked my heart)
I should've never let her go
I should've begged her to stay
She was the one that got away
She was the one that got away

She rolled in
My little sandy town
She spent the summer there
A couple houses down

Overall Meaning

The song "The One That Got Away" by Jake Owen tells the story of a summer romance that was brief but intense, and ended too soon. The singer met a girl in his hometown, and they spent three amazing months together. They wrote their names in the sand, watched the stars, and shared a passionate kiss on Ocean Drive on the Fourth of July. However, the relationship ended when she had to leave, and the singer was left with a broken heart. He regrets letting her go and wishes he had begged her to stay. Every summer, he thinks about her and wonders what could have been.

The lyrics of the song are full of nostalgia, regret, and yearning. The singer describes the magic of the summer when he met the lost love of his life. The use of imagery, such as "magic in the air" and "star-soaked sky," creates a romantic atmosphere that accentuates the intensity of the relationship. However, the tide that washed away their names in the sand also took the girl away from him, leaving him alone with his memories. The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "She was the one that got away," emphasizing the importance of the relationship and the lingering pain of losing it.

The story told in "The One That Got Away" is universal, as many people have experienced a summer fling or a brief but unforgettable romance that ended too soon. The song is a reminder to cherish the people we love while we have them and not to take them for granted. It is also a tribute to the power of memory and the enduring impact of first love.

This song reminds me of my girlfriend for four years who I lost on the night of our fourth anniversary to a drunk driver. As a tribute, I re-wrote the lyrics to this song about her story. She would want others to know her story and what I go through every day.

“The One that Got Away”
(Based on a true story)

She walked by
Her locker next to mine
We shared all the same classes
And I could not look away
I asked her out in the library
She was the best I ever had
We were together for four years
Until one tragic night

She was the one and only one
How will I forever forgive myself
I should’ve never let her drive
Shouldn’t’ve let her past my door
No one knew her like I did
Yeah, the one that got the best of me

It was senior year
Just counting down the days
We toasted to our futures
On our fourth anniversary
I will never forget that night
How the candlelight shined in her eyes
But her life was cut short
On PA 926

She was the one that I lost
The missing part of me
I shouldnt’ve let her leave
Shouldn’t’ve let her out of my sight
Now nothing will ever be the same

Every day I ask myself
What else I could have done
Wish I told her that I loved her
I just say her name now

Oh how I can barely get by
The largest regret of my life
I should’ve taken her keys
And asked her to stay the night
But I had too many to drive her myself

She was the one for me
I never fell so quick for a girl before
We always talked about forever
And how she wanted two kids
But she didn’t know what tomorrow would bring
And it would never be

She was my rock
And a top cross country runner
I have always been chasing behind her
Now I will see you at the finish line god speed…
