St Jude
Florence + the Machine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Another battle never won
And each side is a loser
So who cares who fired the gun?
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
Let loss reveal it
Let loss reveal it
Saint Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes
Saint Jude, we were lost before she started
Saint Jude, we lay in bed as she whipped around us
Saint Jude, maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos
And I was on the island and you were there too
But somehow through the storm I couldn't get to you
Saint Jude, somehow she knew
And she came to give her blessing while causing devastation
And I couldn't keep my mouth shut, I just had to mention
Grabbing your attention
Saint Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes
Saint Jude, we were lost before she started
Saint Jude, we lay in bed as she whipped around us
Saint Jude, maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos
Saint Jude, Saint Jude
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
Let loss reveal it
Let loss reveal it
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
Let loss reveal it
Let loss reveal it
The lyrics to Florence + the Machine's song "St Jude" paint a picture of a world filled with aimless conversations and endless battles, where everyone involved is a loser. Florence reminds us that sometimes it doesn't matter who fired the gun, because the outcome of the situation is always the same—disastrous. She acknowledges that she is grieving, but still trying to find meaning in the chaos.
She turns to Saint Jude, the patron saint of lost causes, for comfort. Florence explains that they were lost before Saint Jude even appeared, but in the midst of chaos, she brought her blessings and a sense of calm. Florence admits that she's always been more comfortable in chaos and that she's struggling to understand the purpose of her grief. In the end, she decides to let loss reveal its own meaning.
"St Jude" is a song about grappling with loss and finding meaning in the chaos of life. Florence's heartfelt lyrics speak to the universal experience of searching for answers in difficult times.

True for me as well. I can't decide if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but embracing it has helped. Chaotic people may not be the best at planning ahead, but at least we are used to improvising and can roll with the punches when life throws surprises at us.
