Night Bus
Lucy Rose Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And you see trouble in her eyes
And you've noticed but only realized
It's not fading however hard you try
'Cause it's built in her for her life

I'm not alone
She said I'm not alone

And she takes the night bus home
She's not fazed by the darkness in her soul
And you barely catch a glimpse of her
'Cause she's wrapped tightly, hiding in her clothes

I'm not alone
She said I'm not alone
No, I'm not alone

Strangers and they're walking my way
And I'm talking to myself
Strangers and they're walking my way
And I'm talking to myself
Strangers and they're walking my way
And I'm talking to myself
Strangers and they're walking my way

She said I'm not alone
She said I'm not alone
She said I'm not alone
No, I'm not alone

Overall Meaning

Lucy Rose's song "Night Bus" depicts a woman who is struggling with emotional issues that seem almost inescapable. The lyrics illustrate that a person's pain can run deep and may not easily fade despite the efforts put forth to move away from it. The individual in this song is someone who has endured a lot of hurt and is still trying to work through it. She may feel isolated, but the person singing to her lets her know that she is not alone in this journey.

The woman takes the night bus home, where she is not bothered by the darkness within her. Her demeanor is quite different from the others on the bus; she is wrapped tightly and hiding in her clothes. She is seemingly trying to retreat into a shell, staying guarded from the outside world, even though she is among strangers.

The repetition of the lyrics "strangers and they're walking my way, and I'm talking to myself," creates a sense of an inner monologue where the singer is battling her thoughts and inner turmoil. Through it all, the person comforting her emphasizes that she is "not alone."

Overall, "Night Bus" is a poignant song that underscores the importance of kindness and empathy. It teaches listeners the importance of being present for those in need and reminding them that there is always someone they can reach out to for support.

Oi, come back

@tibfox

Now this is over a decade ago. I have gone through so much stuff in my life / changed my image of myself around 180°, got happy and balanced & always had her songs with me. I remember a concert a few years ago, hard times for me I can tell you, I sat in the last row a small concert hall, alone and cried 99% of the concert. It was magical and pure me while listening to her beautiful voice. Thank you Lucy for your music.

@chrysippus2

I saw her where she did an encore after some people started leaving; standing kinda crowd. I was definitely out there feeling weird with tears in my eyes until I turned around and saw those present wiping their cheeks. Lucy has a raw power. I can't wait for her to find the next journey to share with us.

@BadLactose

I absolutely love this song. I have listened to it many times over the years and it still gives me goosebumps. I come back to it many times, close my eyes and let the music carry me off.

This summer I did a solo roadtrip across the country. On a lot of those nights alone on the bus, this song is what I fell asleep to. :)
