I'm from a different generation and usually spend a lot of time whining about the piss poor quality of today's music. But, I just discovered this group....and I have shoved a sock into my own mouth for today. This is pure, beautiful, REAL music. Wow, I'm more than blown away. Seriously. ^_^

This is so beautiful. I just can't decide if it's really happy or really sad. To me, it makes me think of a father singing to a child so they aren't afraid of the dark or something, and draws up imagery of friends animatedly frolicking through meadows or something heart-warming like that. It fills me with nostalgia for when I was young and innocent.

I know they didn't write it, but BBC's version is definitely the best.

To be entirely fair and honest, this is a fantastic and worthy tribute by Bombay Bicycle Club to the musical god that is John Martyn and I think he would have been proud.

@quaich14 Eh? JM was an incredible singer! From sweet vocals in his early stuff, to the vocal tour de force of albums like Inside Out to the roar and rasp of later years. He made his voice into an instrument, swooping, diving, buzzing, slurring - a vocal giant.

John put pure emotion into his songs, that's why his singing can sometimes sound slurred. Nevertheless, it's a great cover - but not as good as John in my book.

I like this cover but I find it really sad when people don't realise that John Martyn was the original writer. His version was better and more classic but I think it's been done justice by Bombay Bicycle Club.

The definitive version of this was sung by Derek Brimstone who, sadly, is no longer with us. I saw him at a Folk Concert in 1968/69 and he sang this with great feeling. Much better than John Martyn has managed.

If you're going to cover a song then you need to bring something new to the table, rather than a likeable rendition sat on the end of your bed. But if you feel John Martyn's voice was not up to par, then have a blast in your pool of mediocrity!

am I the only one that gets upset when he says 'if you eat them' Let the sugar fish live! just eat some plants or whatever, they will be happy that you leave them in peace and grand your wishes anyway.

I'm only here because people kept saying on the John Martyn original that this cover version is better...so I thought I'd check it out....sorry but I don't agree. This vocal sounds too 'whiney' to me.
