The Look
Metronomy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're up and you'll get down
You never running from this town
Kinda think you said
You'll never get anything better than this
'Cause you're going 'round in circles
And everyone knows you're trouble

'Cause you read it in a big book
And now you're giving me the look, look
But just remember how we shook, shook
And all the things we took, took
This town's the oldest friend of mine

Get up and we get down
We're always running 'round this town
And to think they said
We'd never make anything better than this
'Cause we're always in small circles
And everyone thinks we're trouble

We didn't read it in a big book (we didn't read it in a big book, big book) (big book)
And now we're giving you the look, look (giving you the look, ah) (giving you the look, ah)
Just remember how we shook, shook (shook, shook) (shook, shook)
And all the things we took, took (took, took)
(This town) (this town) this town's the oldest friend of mine

Overall Meaning

In Metronomy's song The Look, the lyrics portray a sense of complacency and comfort in one's routine. The first verse talks about someone who is content with their current situation and does not feel the need to leave their town. However, they are going around in circles and causing trouble, suggesting that they may be stuck in a cycle of boredom and mischief. The second verse shifts the perspective to the singer and their friend, who are also always running around town and causing trouble. The lyrics suggest a sense of defiance towards those who doubted their ability to achieve anything greater than their current lifestyle. The chorus emphasizes the importance and familiarity of their town, which has been a constant source of comfort and companionship.

The repeated line "we didn't read it in a big book" suggests a rejection of traditional ways of thinking and a desire to carve one's own path in life. The chorus also emphasizes the importance of shared experiences and memories with others. The line "just remember how we shook" refers to a shared moment of excitement or joy, while "all the things we took" refers to memories or items that they have shared.

Overall, the lyrics of The Look paint a picture of a group of individuals who are content with their lives and are not interested in conforming to traditional standards of success. They find comfort in each other and in their shared experiences within their own town.

@doom1509

God tier mixing.
I played this video off my bluetooth in my car, off my luxury sound system, and finally off my headphones.

It is uncanny how well mixed this is. What makes this perfect is that the song is also a gem. Every instrument has a unique presence - that crank ratchet is deliciously mixed in and kept subtle throughout. The use of the acoustic guitar chords for those "oompf" accents/impacts...

Just ~~~~~aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah😇~

This is music at its finest, folks.
You know about tears of happiness?
This song gives me tears of appreciation.

I'm so sad because I always enjoy music in my solitude, I wish to know someone to love and enjoy this feeling together

@Unherist

10 years since I first heard this song, and I just wanted to come here and say what a banger it still is. It is crazy to me how good it sounds, it never got old and probably never will. Thanks for the gem.
