When I awoke this morning, "Charmaine" was buzzing around in my head! I've no idea why! My Dad was very musical and would sing along with Mantovani's heavenly strings. Dad taught me to love music of all kinds. He is in Heaven now (died September 1994). One day we'll sing it together❤

My Mother loved this song. She passed March '83. I bought a car later that year or early '84, in the glove box was a cassette of Mantovani's greatest hits. Was night as I slipped the tape in the player pushed play, and this started. The wipers did not help me see.

Beautiful it brings back memories of my mam and dad they loved his music they did a lot of dancing to his music I miss them so much I never got enough time with them as they both died in there fifties I was only seventeen when my dad died and twenty seven when my mam died so thank you for the wonderful memories. 😘 I was born in 1958 same year this was out.

Me too, I had heard it many times before but that episode of Endevour planted it in my mind. That TV series brought back such memories of my times as a young man, good and bad, but it was a much richer period than I can experience today now in my final years. I was 7 years old,it was 1985 and i was with my Beloved Grandad in his butchers shop.He always listened to the Wireless as he called it.A little clock radio in the corner of the shopOne early evening this came on and he told how much he loved this song.It will stay with me forever this piece of music.And never let me let go of this truely precious memory i have left of him.I miss my grandad!

its not reverb, its arrangement. very cleverly arranged. the strings play in sequence, to make it sounds like a larger sound. the idea is to make it sound like an echo, which it does. this was his signature sound.

Originally written for an early sound film, by composer Erno Rapee, and used in a second film a few years later, "Charmaine" proved immediately popular, but by 1950 had become largely forgotten. Owing to its inclusion, with Rapee's other famous composition, "Diane", in the film "Sunset Boulevard", starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden, in 1950, it was heard by Mantovani and his wife Winifred, when they attended an early cinema showing. Mantovani asked Ronald Binge to arrange both songs to include in an album of waltzes. His recording of "Charmaine" was played continually by an American disc jockey on a radio programme, and this led to a public demand for a single, which had not by then been produced. Its astonishing record sales figure persuaded Mantovani to adopt "Charmaine" as his own signature tune, and Binge's style of arranging for strings, as heard in "Charmaine" became known as the Mantovani Cascading Strings style. However, 'cascades' are not used as often as people think, and in fact 'rising' strings are just as much of a feature, but the main trick to scoring in this style is by overlapping, and sustaining the string parts, to create an echo effect which is not dependent on studio recording gimmicks. We performed a great many of Binge's and Mantovani's arrangements live, with the Magic of Mantovani Orchestra, and from the first cou-le of bars in the first rehearsal, the Mantovani effect, exactly as heard on the records, was at once apparent, without microphones, speakers, or any electronic gadgetry. The success of the original album led to a new recording many years later, when Mantovani was responsible for recording the very first stereo tracks ever made, which were for the Decca London label.

I had this at my mothers funeral into church. My father died 40 years before my mother, he was only 51. I remember him listening to this when I was a little girl. It was a gift from my late father to my mother. Simply beautiful.

With Dear Ronald Binges ‘soaring strings’. That man was a GENIUS in the use of multi layering orchestral strings! My late mums favourite was ‘Sailing By’ We played it at her funeral she would have been smiling! Thank you to the masters of easy listening I was only 5 when I first heard this and from that moment ADORED playing and listening to this. I miss the ‘Good Old Days’ i hate todays modern world it RUSHES BY too fast😢

My beloved Dad died six years before I got married. I managed not to get upset during the wedding day but on reaching the hotel we were staying overnight at that evening, this beautiful recording of Mantovani's Charmaine was playing in the cocktail bar and I couldn't hold back the tears as it just reminded me of the one person who was missing that day and I broke down and cried at that point. Mantovani's music always takes me back to my childhood years listening to the radio and the distinctive sound of his orchestra that could never be mistaken for any other. Such a wonderful sound which has never been replicated before or since.

This takes me and my wife back to the 1960s and the former Gaumont cinema in Salisbury, England where the tune was played everyday before the film programme started. Whenever it comes on the radio we look at each other and remember those courting days before we married over fifty years ago. Beautiful, timeless music in a mad world, but we have the memories.

We had this playing as we walked into church for my mother’s funeral 4 years ago, it was a cold March afternoon and the sun was shining. We chose this as my late father who died suddenly in ‘78 used to listen to this regularly.
