Marc Broussard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"Rolling down the road, going nowhere,
Guitar packed in a trunk
Somewhere around mile marker 1-12,
Papa started hummin' the funk
I gotta jones in my bones before they know,
We were singing this melody
Stop the car pulled out the guitar,
Halfway to New Orleans

Said take me home
Take me home

Could feel the sun about to rise,
When I realized we had nothing to fear
It's just me and my daddy and a kid named Cope,
Making music that nobody would hear
And then the sun let up and it split the night,
Spillin' over our jubilee
Ten thousand cars by the side of the road,
Groovin' far as the eye can see

Said take me home
Take me home
Said take me home
Said take me home

This Greyhound is delta bound mama,
Baby boy finally found,
Said this Greyhound is delta bound mama,
Baby boy done finally found his way home
Said take me home

Here we go,
Hot damn you should have felt the groove,
Like I was swimming in a sea of soul
The sun was rising and the day was hot,
And we was all about to lose control
My daddy turned his face up towards the sky,
And I knew that there was nothing to lose
I felt the crowd breathe in and I closed my eyes,
And we disappeared into the groove

Said take me home
Said take me home
Take me home
Said take me home

Straight from the water
Straight from the water, children
Straight from the water
Straight from the water, children
Straight from the water
Straight from the water, children
Straight from the water
You don't know nothin' about this

Take me home
Said take me home

Said take me home
Said take me home
Said take me home
Said take me home
Said take me home
take me home
Said take me home
Said take me home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Home" tell the story of a father and son going on a road trip with their friend Cope, who play music together. They're not looking for fame or fortune, just the pure joy of making music. The opening verse describes them driving down the road with the guitar in the trunk and the father humming a funky melody. When they stop the car halfway to New Orleans, they start playing music and singing a melody that transforms into the chorus of the song, "Take me home." As the sun rises, they see thousands of people jamming together, enjoying their music.

The second verse tells of their journey, as they take a Greyhound bus to the Mississippi Delta. The son describes the amazing feeling of performing, seeing the crowd breathing in, and feeling the groove as they sing "Take me home" together. The final verse is a repetition of "Straight from the water" children, which could be a reference to the African American experience of crossing over to freedom in the North, straight from the water of the Mississippi Delta. The song concludes with the repeated refrain of "Take me home" expressing the singer's desire to return to, or remain in, this space of musical bliss that had enveloped him.

This was the first song I ever heard from Marc Broussard. Man. That big voice and swampy feel. It's irresistible. He has matured into one of the best soul singers I've ever heard! Just rediscovered him lately and I'm blown away.

@Kimberly-ts5pe

Same! I agree 100%!

@melissamarhatta5762

It was my first and favorite song of his too! You described his voice exactly on point!

@donaldthomas1307

I think he is fantastic! Heard him for the first time when our family was visiting in Carmel Ca. My daughter had her music on. I heard "Home" looked it up and the artist that sings it. And he wrote it. I bet I have listened to it 1000 times, since first listening in July. Have listened to so many of his recordings since. Would love to see you in concert in The Bay area, In November. That would be so fun. My husband and I have been to many concerts. We have seen Journey 17 times in the past 15 years. And many other performers.Keep that soul, funk, blues whatever you want to call it, goin. You are just awesome. Oh, and we are 77 years young, Marc. Who says old people can't be kool πŸ‘πŸŽ‡

This is the first song I heard from him too. I was lucky enough to hear him at the River Fete in Alexandria Louisiana.

So talented… a joy to listen to

@GrubbyPigeon

My granddaddy just passed. He was a real Cajun. His parents couldn’t speak a lick of English.
This reminds me of him. I now love this song in a very different way. Thank you, Marc.

I heard this song shortly after it was released. I am just as impressed with it today as I was 15 years ago when it was released. Marc is a man of immense talent, and this song is an incredible homage to traditional Southern Rythm and Blues.
