Easy Way to Cry
David Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Smoke curls through my hands
These one night stands
Are making me crazy I know
Morning I'll go
Crowds in the rain all passing by

Faith gone from your eyes
Each word it flies
Taking you further away
And come that day
There ain't no easy way to cry

And as I watch you leave I stand
Inside my house of straw
And everywhere I go I find
Things recollecting to my mind
How right it all could be

Faith gone from your eyes
Each word it flies
Straight to the heart and I know
Watching you go
There ain't no easy way to cry

So right now
So right now
So right now

And as I watch you leave I stand
Inside my house of straw
And everywhere I go I find
Things recollecting to my mind
How right it all could be
Could be

So right now
So right now
So right now
So right so right
So right

Overall Meaning

The song "Easy Way to Cry" by David Gray is about a man who is struggling to cope with the pain of a breakup. He reflects on his past relationships and one night stands, which have only made him feel more isolated and desperate. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of this experience, using powerful imagery to convey the singer's sense of loss and despair.

The opening line, "Smoke curls through my hands," is particularly evocative. It suggests a sense of aimlessness and frustration, as the singer grapples with his emotions. He knows that his actions are only making things worse, but he can't seem to stop himself. As the song progresses, he becomes more and more isolated, feeling that he has lost his connection to faith and love.

The chorus, "There ain't no easy way to cry," is a poignant reminder that grief is a necessary part of the healing process. Despite the pain, the singer knows that he must confront his emotions head-on in order to move forward. The final lines of the song, "So right now, so right now, so right now," suggest a newfound sense of clarity and determination. Though the road ahead may be difficult, the singer is ready to face it with strength and courage.

When i discovered D G , he instantly became one of my favorite singer song writers! This song elevated that feeling to the greatest song writer i’ve seen! A big statement to make , i know but for me his “ wordplay” and verrbal sketching that i am sure gives every listener of his music their own personal relatable experience is not equalled by even Roger Waters, Bob Dillon, Neil Young, the brilliant Ed Sheeran, Dave Gilmore ....ect, or even Shakespear if you will! Yes, i said it!
