Velvet
The Big Pink Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seen it in my head, burning my heart
Seen it in my past, back in my home
Doesn't make sense, see her again
I don't, know
I felt it for some time, ever not at all
Poison in my head, gun love hurts
I'm not looking for love, but it's hard to resist
I don't recall, me and mistakes

She's the only one, that's the best I've had
I found her in a dream, looking for me
This heart's on fire, I'll bring myself
Up to the force, down again

These arms are mine
Don't matter who they hold
So should i maybe, Just leave love alone
You call out my name, for the love you need
Which you won't find in me

These arms are mine
Don't matter who they hold
You're made for me, and I'll leave love alone
you call out my name for the love you need
Which you won't find in me

Seen it in my head, burning my heart
I found her in a dream, looking for me
Doesn't make sense, see her again
I don't, know

I can see the end, of what I've become
A tale of a love, come and gone
But now my love, no promises
I won't go, falling in love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Big Pink's song Velvet describe a complex mix of emotions about love and a past relationship. The opening lines, "Seen it in my head, burning my heart, seen it in my past, back in my home," suggest that the singer is haunted by memories of a past relationship that ended badly. He cannot shake these memories and is struggling to make sense of them.

The lines "Poison in my head, gun love hurts, I'm not looking for love, but it's hard to resist" suggest that the singer has been hurt in the past and is wary of falling in love again. However, despite his reservations, he finds it difficult to resist the pull of love.

The lines "She's the only one, that's the best I've had, I found her in a dream, looking for me," suggest that the singer has found someone special, but is reluctant to commit to the relationship. He is torn between his feelings for this person and his fear of getting hurt again.

Overall, the lyrics to Velvet are a powerful exploration of the emotions and conflicts that come with falling in love and facing the possibility of heartbreak. The song captures the complexity of these feelings with honesty and insight.

I always find myself coming back to this song. I'm from the UK and this band is not really known that well. They don't know what they're missing.

@missunderstood539

I agree on so many levels. And same goes here too in the states.

@robertorolfo

I lived in Italy when this came out, and they sort of got some attention there, but I never understood why they didn't get more attention. Just like, "The Music" another great little band that was basically ignored. @@missunderstood539

I saw these guys while they were supporting Muse while at university. I knew of one song of theirs (Dominos was on an Xbox advert) and I fell in love. They should have more albums...

P.s. UK also!

"These arms of mine don't mind who they hold." Brilliant.

I just freaking love how this song modulates to the 5th when it hits the "These arms are mine," section. It makes that part so incredibly powerful. Great songwriting on their part to shift like that. It's moves like this that people don't catch musically, but it's part of the band's way to impact and connect with the listener.
