Town Called Malice
The Jam Lyrics

Better stop dreaming of the quiet life, 'cause it's the one we'll never know
And quit running for the runaway bus 'cause those rosy days are few
And stop apologizing for the things you've never done
'Cause time is short and life is cruel but it's up to us to change
This town called malice

Rows and rows of disused milk floats stand dying in the dairy yard
And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk bottles to their hearts
Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious
In a town called malice, yeah

Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba, oh
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba

Struggle after struggle, year after year
The atmosphere's a fine blend of ice, I'm almost stone cold dead
In a town called malice, ooh yeah

A whole street's belief in Sunday's roast beef
Gets dashed against the Co-op
To either cut down on beer or the kid's new gear
It's a big decision in a town called malice, ooh yeah

(Ooh)

The ghost of a steam train, echoes down my track
It's at the moment bound for nowhere
Just going round and round, oh
Playground kids and creaking swings
Lost laughter in the breeze
I could go on for hours and I probably will
But I'd sooner put some joy back
In this town called malice, yeah

(Ooh)

In this town called malice, yeah
In this town called malice, ooh yeah

One of the best opening verses to any song ever:

Better stop dreaming of the quiet life
'Cos it's the one we'll never know
And quit running for that runaway bus
'Cos those rosey days are few
And...stop apologising for the things you've never done
'Cos time is short and life is cruel
But it's up to us to change
This town called Malice

No.1 SINGLE: The Jam - Town Called Malice / Precious

I always remember my mum saying to whoever, maybe to me, but probably more too herself, “Double figures now”, as if she herself couldn’t quite believe her little baby boy was growing too fast.

Being a parent myself , I can now get that way of thinking. The baby years are a fleeting moment in the big vastness of things and, as your child’s ages clicks round and you find two digits instead of one, it finally dawns on you that it’s now not long before the real emotional growing will commence.

Of course for the child (and I was no different), it’s the dawn of a new adventure. Wow. 10!

As that was manifesting in me, the end of an era was closing for Paul Weller and the Jam.

They were going out with a blast at the top of the singles chart.
And what a song it was too.

I loved this one.

One of the greatest songs ever written about being British working class. Love to each and everyone of you.

@Pat Hat There was once a bloke called Pat,
Who was not very good with fact,
The chip on his shoulder,
Was the size of a boulder,
And made him look like a twat.

Pure genius at every level. Feel privileged to have been a young person when bands like the Jam, the Stranglers, Blondie, the Clash, the Pistols [the list is endless] were the mainstream musical staple diet. Oh how things have changed.

@Canes Venatici He's speaking to all of you who don't understand subjectivity. SMH

Yes. And, like your parents and their parents, you think things were better when you were young. You are simply romanticizing your childhood and there is nothing objectively better or worse about music, fashion, or popular fads. The Sex Pistols were awful from a musical standpoint, but they had the rebellious fans of the time. That's it... nothing more. Maybe you should consider not being stuck in decades gone by?

Tripzville, You know exactly to well, we had fantastic sounds way back in the day and you are absolutely right, to many sounds to mention.
