More Than I Can Say
Leo Sayer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh oh, yea, yea

I love you more than I can say
I'll love you twice as much tomorrow
Oh love you more than I can say

Oh oh, yea, yea

I miss you every single day
Why must my life be filled with sorrow
Oh love you more than I can say

Don't you know I need you so
Tell me please I gotta know
Do you mean to make me cry
Am I just another guy

Oh oh, yea, yea

I miss you more than i can say
Why must my life be filled with sorrow
Oh love you more than I can say

Oh, don't you know I need you so
So tell me please I gotta know
Do you mean to make me cry
Am I just another guy

Oh oh, yea, yea

I love you more than I can say
I'll love you twice as much tomorrow
Oh love you more than I can say

I love you more than I can say
I love you more than I can say (more than I can say)

I love you twice as much tomorrow (more than I can say)
I love you twice as much tomorrow

(More than I can say) I love you more than I can say
(More than I can say) I love you more than words can say yeah

Overall Meaning

Leo Sayer's song "More Than I Can Say" is a ballad that explores the depths of sincere love and affection. The singer opens the song with an exclamation of love towards his partner, admitting that he loves them more than what he can verbally communicate. He also promises to love his partner even more tomorrow, signifying the continuity and never-ending nature of his affection. The repeating chorus of "Oh love you more than I can say" emphasizes the depth and intensity of the singer's feelings, which surpass the limitations of verbalization.

In the second verse, the singer confesses his intense longing for his partner, expressing how much he misses them every single day. However, his life is also filled with sorrow, leaving the listener to wonder the reason why. The third verse continues with the singer expressing his insecurities and fear of being just "another guy." He wants to know if his partner truly loves him or if his partner only intends to make him cry.

Overall, the song shows the vulnerability, intensity, and realities of being in a relationship where love and affection are not always reciprocated in the same manner.

My mother's favorite song when we first came from Cambodia. She passed away several weeks ago. We use to sing it and it helped us learn the American language. Love and miss you mom, may you find the enlightened path to peace, prosperity and nirvana.. God bless your soul!

When my only son, Alvaro, was born in 1979, I used to sing this to him so often. Now he's an adult and today, 8/4/2019, he sent this to me, remembering that I used to sing it to him when he was a kid. Gee, I wish it was possible to go back in time to 1979, the happiest day of my entire life was the day my son was born on December 13, 1979.
