Morna is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde.
Lyrics are usually in Cape Verdean Creole, and instrumentation often includes cavaquinho, clarinet, accordion, violin, piano and guitar. Morna is often compared to the blues; there is little research on the relationship between the genres, though there are interesting similarities and significant cultural connections between Cape Verde and the United States.
Morna is widely considered the national music of Cape Verde, as is the fado for Portugal, the tango for Argentina, the rumba for Cuba, and so on.
The best internationally known morna singer is Cesária Évora.

The lyrics of Cesaria Evora's song "Sodade" reflect the longing and nostalgia of someone who is far away from their homeland, specifically from São Nicolau, an island in Cape Verde. The song is made up of a simple melody and repetitive lyrics that capture the essence of the Cape Verdean culture, where music is used to express all aspects of life, including love, heartbreak, and homesickness.
The first two stanzas express the desire to know who can guide the way to São Tomé, which is seen as a metaphor for the unknown path that the singer is taking away from home. The following stanzas repeat the word "sodade," which is used to represent a deep emotional feeling of nostalgia and homesickness.
The final stanza talks about the difficulty of forgetting one's homeland and the hope of one day being able to return. The repetition of "sodade" throughout the entire song reinforces the theme of longing and creates a sense of yearning in the listener.

Who has shown you this distant way? Who has shown you this distant way? This way to Saint Tome? The longing. The longing. The longing for this land of mine, Saint Nicolau. If you write me letter I will write you back. If you forget me I will forget you until the day you come back.

I was fortunate to see Cesaria Evora once in concert. Many years ago, I suffered from depression and anxiety issues, and my mental health worker would play Cesaria very softly in the background during our counselling sessions, which I found very soothing.....when I finally got better....I found out that Cesaria was playing in a city nearby. I took my mental health worker, and my best friend. It was a wonderful concert, and I am grateful to Senora Evora for helping in my recovery.
