judging by this song, the new album is going to be a perfect, intertwined end product of all 5 previous albums. the raw, robotic grooves from their Self-Titled the melodic, yet abstract orchestration from Rated R the sheer heaviness and huge sounds from Songs For The Deaf the perfectly structured and timelessly catchy riffs from Lullabies To Paralyze and of course the dark and twisted, disturbing beauty from Era Vulgaris . Where it begins to wind down at 3:09 is so classic QOTSA I just love it!

It's a brilliant setup - from the impression I get the two of them have a great working relationship and did, once, produce some of my favourite music. The live line-up for Flak and Flight is one of the strongest from that era. As for Pine.. I listened to it when it first came out and enjoyed it cos it's MoR, but it coincided with me losing my obsessive interest in the scene. I'm glad that Masters, Fatso, etc are still going, but it's mostly just nostalgia from a decade ago for me now!

Really intrigued to know what key this is in. Main riff and chorus is in E minor but the verse gets funky and goes to either G# minor or C# minor with the notes being played. G# A# D# not in the scale of E minor. That interlude before the second chorus changes it up even further as well.

Pretty simple - The whole piece relies on the relationship between the parallel key signatures of E Major and E Minor. Starts off in E Minor, goes into the parallel major (E Major) for the verses, hence the B, G#, D# progression. The chorus has a flattened 3rd (G Minor chord) giving it more of a “mystical” feeling while still being in E Major. Then, the interlude goes back into E Minor (D, F#m, C, Em), but the F# isn’t diminished like the normal E Minor scale which gives it an “unexpected” disorienting feeling in a nutshell to the listener. Finally, the outro is pure E Minor (Am, G, B, Em progression), til that last time when Josh makes the 4th sharpened (A Major); This essentially gives the riff a quick boost of “Major” energy (pun intended) before the grand finale with that final E Minor chord being hit with an upstroke. Love live music theory :)

I haven't heard the whole thing, and I am slightly worried that it's being hyped too much, but I think this album is shaping up to possibly be their best yet, and worth waiting for. Even if it isn't, I've never regretted buying any Queens album and by what I've heard so far it will at the very least be a good one.

Nice to hear more real music in 2013! However faint, my faith is kept alive by such bands and such songs. Grunge and Stoner Rock have always been the rawest, purest forms of music in my eyes. Actual musicians, actually writing and actually playing their own actual music - no drum machines, no auto-tune, and that's beautiful.

That said, I've seen QOTSA a couple of times at least, live, and given them a fair crack of the whip, I'm not being prejudiced too much or unfair... it's just that people seem to find more special about this stuff than is actually special in my decades of listening to rock music. When that happens, I smell marketing, not genuine explorers of sounds providing the market. Fuck! Problem is, there's only so many *unique* chord/note/song combos and we reached saturation in rock music a long time ago.

It's a great song indeed. Have you heard the band Hermano? Good, heavy rock riffs. Alone Jeffe is a good track by them. Definitely worth a listen if you enjoy Queens of the Stone Age.
