You Made Me Love You
Judy Garland Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I didn't want to do it, I didn't want to do it
You made me love you
And all the time you knew it
I guess you always knew it.
You made me happy sometimes, you made me glad
But there were times, Dear, you made me feel so bad
You made me sigh for, I didn't want to tell you
I didn't want to tell you
I want some love that's true, yes I do, deed I do, you know I do
Give me, give me, give me what I cry for
You know you got the brand of kisses that I'd die for
You know you made me love you
The lyrics of Judy Garland's iconic song "You Made Me Love You" tackle the idea of falling in love with someone against your will. The singer explains that they never intended to fall in love with the person, but their actions and behavior led to them falling head over heels. The repetition of the opening lines - "You made me love you / I didn't want to do it, I didn't want to do it" - highlights the internal struggle and conflict the singer experienced. The lyrics go on to express both positive and negative feelings towards this person, acknowledging that while they brought happiness and joy, they were also able to cause pain and sadness.
The line "You know you got the brand of kisses that I'd die for" is a powerful declaration of the depth of the singer's feelings. They are willing to do anything for this person, even give up their life. Additionally, the line "Give me, give me, give me what I cry for" speaks to the intense desire and longing the singer feels for this person.
Overall, "You Made Me Love You" captures the complex emotions that come with falling in love unexpectedly and showcases Garland's incredible vocal range and emotive delivery.

I was reading a book, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, and the main character said that he met his first true love to this song. I thought I'd see what it sounded like.

If you listen to her first recording of this in 1938 when she was 14, her voice is pure innocence and full of wonder and hope. Then listen to this version and you can hear the adult woman she had become and all the pain and passion of her life is reflected in her voice. I so loved this woman <3
