Torches Together
mewithoutYou Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Under a bowl
Or under a lamp shade
Or on the shelf beside the bed
Where at night you lay turning
Like a door on its hinges
First on your left side
Then on your right side
Then on your left side again
Why burn poor and lonely?
Tell all the stones
We're gonna make a building
They'll be cut into shape
And set into place
Or if you'd rather be a window
I'll gladly be the frame
Reflecting any kind words
We'll let in all the blame
And ruin our reputation all the same
So never mind our plan making
We'll start living
Anyway
Aren't you unbearably sad?
Then why burn so poor and lonely?
We'll be like torches
We'll be like torches
We'll be like torches
We'll be torches together
Torches together
We'll be like torches
We'll be like torches
With whatever respect
Our tattered dignity demands
Torches together
Hand in hand
Why pluck one string?
What good is just one note?
Oh one string sounds fine I guess
But we were once one note
We weren't lonely wheat
Quietly ground into grain
One light and momentary pain
So why the safe distance?
This curious look
Why tear out single pages,
When you can throw away the book?
Why pluck one string when you can
Strum the guitar?
Strum the guitar
Strum the guitar
Strum the guitar
With no beginning
With no end
Take down the guitar
And strum the guitar
Strum the guitar if you're afraid
And I'm afraid
And everyone's afraid
And everyone knows it
But we don't have to be afraid
Anymore
You played the flute
But no one was dancing
You sang a sad song
But none of us cried
You played the flute
But no one was dancing
And you sang a sad song
You sang such a sad song
The song βTorches Togetherβ by mewithoutYou is about coming together as a community in order to overcome loneliness and sadness. The first stanza asks why someone would choose to burn βpoor and lonelyβ hidden away, when they could shine like a torch and become part of a larger community. The singer invites the listener to build something greater together, and to let in any kind words or blame, together ruining their reputation. The second stanza reinforces this sentiment, arguing that just one note or strand is not enough, and that we should strive for unity in order to create something greater.
The chorus of the song repeats the line βwe'll be like torches, torches together,β emphasizing the importance of unity and community. The final stanza describes someone playing the flute and singing a sad song, but not being able to move anyone to dance or cry. This appears to be a metaphor for feelings of loneliness or isolation, and reinforces the idea that we are stronger and more effective as a community than as individuals.
Line by Line Meaning
Why burn poor and lonely?
Why expend yourself when you're alone and lacking in every way?
Under a bowl
Keeping yourself hidden
Or under a lamp shade
Being exposed only to what's in your comfort zone
Or on the shelf beside the bed
Stagnating, instead of being where the action is
Where at night you lay turning
At a loss and in a state of restlessness
Like a door on its hinges
Inextricably tied to one place and opening only in one direction
First on your left side
Turning left, in search of comfort
Then on your right side
Turning right, to look for something new
Then on your left side again
Being indecisive and going back where you started
Tell all the stones
Spread the word to everyone and everything
We're gonna make a building
We'll use all our resources to build something great
They'll be cut into shape
Everyone will put in the effort to make sure everything is perfect
And set into place
Everything will fall into line as it should
Or if you'd rather be a window
If you're comfortable being exposed to everything
I'll gladly be the frame
I'll protect and support you
Reflecting any kind words
Sharing compliments with others
We'll let in all the blame
We'll accept responsibility, for better or for worse
And ruin our reputation all the same
No matter the outcome, we'll always stay true to ourselves.
So never mind our plan making
We don't need to stick to plans, we can improvise.
We'll start living anyway
We'll just start doing without worrying about the consequences.
Aren't you unbearably sad?
Aren't you weighed down by your sadness?
Then why burn so poor and lonely?
Why waste away when you can light up and come alive?
We'll be like torches
We'll light the way for others
We'll be torches together
We'll do it together, supporting one another
Why pluck one string?
Why limit yourself?
What good is just one note?
One small action isn't enough to make a real difference.
Oh one string sounds fine I guess
It might be okay, but it's not great.
But we were once one note
We used to be just like this, but we changed and grew.
We weren't lonely wheat
We weren't alone, and we weren't helpless.
Quietly ground into grain
We transformed, but not necessarily silently.
One light and momentary pain
The transformation was worth that small amount of pain.
So why the safe distance?
Why hold back and not truly engage?
This curious look
This look that shows interest but not actual participation.
Why tear out single pages,
Why only engage a little and not a lot?
When you can throw away the book?
Why limit yourself to small gestures?
Why pluck one string when you can strum the guitar?
Why focus on one small thing when you can do so much more?
With no beginning
With no limits on what we can do.
With no end
We can keep going and improving for as long as we want.
Take down the guitar
Let's start strumming the guitar.
And strum the guitar
Let's really get into it.
Strum the guitar if you're afraid
Let go of your fears, and join in.
And I'm afraid
I might be afraid, but I'm still jumping in.
And everyone's afraid
We're all scared, but we can still do it together.
And everyone knows it
We all understand that we're scared.
But we don't have to be afraid
We can still move forward, despite our fears.
You played the flute
You tried to inspire, but it didn't go well.
But no one was dancing
No one was caught up in the moment.
And you sang a sad song
You tried to make people feel something, but it didn't work.
You sang such a sad song
The sadness was real, but it couldn't move people.

for me, mewithoutyou has something timeless going for it. They're very poetic, complex and have a sweet abstract kind of sounds. Often intense, but always meaningful. gotta love it. struuuum the guitarrrr!!

This band has always been so underrated...
@paperbagmask4681
Friggin yes they have my best friend likes them alot and I've just started listening to them and I'm upset that I haven't listened to them sooner
@willshogren1987
I suspect it has something to do with people being (somewhat justifiably) dismissive of Tooth and Nail. I think they would have been bigger on something like 4AD.
@jadavis84
meh they're "rated" more like. I really like their music but I can definitely see why most people wouldn't be into it.
@zero88777
This album will always be in my top 5 favorites of all time. Such incredible musicianship, lyrics, and just raw emotion. Everything by MwY is incredible, but this one always the cake for me.
@panagiotisk1141
10 years later and this still hlds true <3
@Nambale
The band is an acquired taste, I think. They're one of my favourite but I don't know many other people who enjoy them. Different strokes for different folks as they say, I suppose.
@JasonSanders
it's because they are too busy listening to essentially the same 2 songs with the same formulas. if they hear something that even mildly steps out of those boundaries, they aren't interested in opening their ears for 2 seconds to explore different styles. why? i don't know, maybe because they've grown up around the same things to the point where they get baby bird syndrome.
