When My Time Comes
Dawes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There were moments of dreams
I was offered to save.
I lived less like a workhorse,
More like a slave.
I thought that one quick moment
That was noble or brave
Would be worth the most of my life.

So I pointed my fingers
And shouted few quotes I knew,
As if something that's written
Should be taken as true.
But every path I had taken
And conclusion I drew
Would put truth back under the knife.

And now the only piece of advice that continues to help
Is anyone that's making anything new only breaks something else.

When my time comes,
Oh oh oh oh.
When my time comes,
Oh oh oh oh.

So I took what I wanted
And put it out of my reach.
I wanted to pay for my successes
With all my defeats.
And if Heaven was all
That was promised to me
Why don't I pray for death?

Now it seems like the unravelling
Started too soon.
Now I'm sleeping in hallways
And I'm drinking perfume,
And I'm speaking to mirrors,
And I'm howling at moons,
While the worse and the
Worse that it gets.

Oh you can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's starin' right back.

When my time comes,
Oh oh oh oh.
When my time comes,
Oh oh oh oh.

Well you can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's starin' right back.

When my time comes,
Oh oh oh oh.
When my time comes,
Oh oh oh oh.

When my time comes,
Oh oh oh oh.

Overall Meaning

The song "When My Time Comes" by Dawes is a deep reflection on life, identity, and purpose. In the first verse, the lyricist reflects on the moments of dreams and the opportunity to save something. They then go on to talk about how they were living less as a workhorse and more as a slave, trying to achieve one noble or brave moment that would make their life meaningful. They point their fingers and shout out a few known quotes, somehow thinking that they are proclaiming the truth. But every path they take and conclusion they draw undoes the truth that they thought they had captured. The only advice that seems useful is that anyone that creates something new only breaks something else.

In the second verse, the lyricist admits that they took what they wanted and put it out of reach, thinking that paying for their successes would somehow fulfill them even though they still feel unfulfilled. They question the promise of heaven and wonder why they don't pray for death when that's all that was promised to them. They then reflect on how things seem to be coming undone too soon and they're left sleeping in hallways, drinking perfume, talking to mirrors, and howling at the moon. In the end, they reflect on how one can judge the world and its lack of sparkle or stare into the abyss, but it's always staring right back.

Overall, "When My Time Comes" is a deep reflection on what it means to live a meaningful and fulfilling life. It's about the struggle to find purpose and meaning and the realization that it's not as easy as it seems. It's about accepting the good and the bad and finding a way to move forward, even when everything around us is falling apart.

My best friend died in 2012. About 5 years later I accidentally discovered how to read all your old conversations in Facebook, and I found a message from my best friend that I'd never seen, one of the last ones he ever wrote me. It was this song/video, and he said, "I really, really dig this song. Let me know what you think". It was very fitting, as he was always unafraid to die, and always smiling and laughing. And I love this song.

“Oh, you can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks. You can stare into the abyss but it’s starring right back.”
Those lyrics always hit home for some reason.

If you like lyrics like that (and aren't already familiar), check out Dr. Dog. "That Old Black Hole" is my fav song of theirs and I think you'll see it carries some of the same awesome vibe that this song has.
