Big Parade
The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lovely girl, won't you stay, won't you stay, stay with me?
All my life I was blind, I was blind, now I see
Lovely girl, won't you stay, won't you stay, stay with me?
All my life I was blind, I was blind, now I see

Fleet of black, fleet of black limousines
Oh tinted machines, here comes the cavalcade
With the armored cars, armored cars like Barettas
Flags on antennas designed to keep me safe, keep me safe

And oh my my, oh hey hey
Here he comes, the candidate
Blue-eyed boy, United States
Vote for him, the candidate

Diamonds cut, diamonds cut for the carats
Plaster of Paris, the floats fill up the street
And the beauty queens, beauty queens with the white gloves
All sick from the nightclubs, they wave with pageantry, pageantry

And oh my my, oh hey hey
Here it comes, the big parade
Marching bands and barricades
Make way, for the big parade
Oh

Canvas covered, canvas covered in resin
Violent men dance the blood ballet
And the bookies say, bookies say it's the third round
Oh when Louie will go down
If he don't there's hell to pay, hell to raise

And oh my my, oh hey hey
Here he comes, the welterweight
Take a dive, for goodness sake
Did you say goodbye to the welterweight?

Catholic priest, Catholic priest in a crisis
Torn between romance and Jesus, who will win the civil war?
And he says I'm in love, I'm in love with a woman
Yeah, this is my confession, I'm leaving, I can't be a priest anymore, anymore

And oh my my, oh hey hey
There he goes, the man of faith
Left the church for a fiancé
Let him love, a man of faith
Oh

TV cameras, TV cameras, and stagehands
American Bandstand, electric guitars
And he's singin' songs, singin' songs for the lonely
Well the girls with the room keys
They know all his words by heart, by heart, and they all sing

Lovely girl, won't you stay, won't you stay, stay with me?
All my life I was blind, I was blind, now I see
Lovely girl, won't you stay, won't you stay, stay with me?
All my life I was blind, I was blind, now I see

Lovely girl, won't you stay?
Oh, oh, oh

Oh my my, oh hey hey
Here she comes by saving grace
Burn the car and save the plates
She's arrived, my saving grace

Overall Meaning

The Lumineers' Big Parade is a commentary on the shallowness and absurdity of American politics and culture. The song tells a story of a politician's parade by describing the luxurious vehicles, beauty queens, and the candidate himself. The song highlights the superficiality of American politics by suggesting that the candidate is just a blue-eyed boy and urging the listeners to question their choice of candidate. The song also talks about a Catholic priest's conflict between Jesus and romance, which further shows the shallowness of American culture. The song ends by introducing a saving grace, a lovely girl who can save the singer from his blindness, suggesting that the hope for America lies in individual connections, not in politics or culture.

This band has become my favourite of this entire generation. I find that it is rare to hear music as great and folky...-ish themed like the stuff the Lumineers put out. Their music is so cheerful. Anyone who says they hate their songs is lying and actually listens to it in private.

@DamonPowers

I'm becoming very addicted to The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, and Of Monsters and Men. For a while there I was losing faith with our generation of music, but these 3 really show what music should be.

@ilike_color

i hate to agree with you but... I AGREE

@EliskaHrubcova

You speak from my heart ❤️

@calebcarney3117

Try Kaleo as well... start with automobile!

@nathanthompson176

Just about to say the exact same thing almost 10 years too late 😂

@sandraedwards9943

For Sure!!! I also recently fell in love with Banners. I never cared for any Christian music but the group Need to Breath is definitely on my list of ones that I like. Guess I am just a late bloomer in liking different music groups.

My grandpa left the priesthood for my grandmother in 1967. The first time I heard the last verse I wept.

When my grandpa left, the archbishop of Chicago at the time tried to get him to stay in the priesthood and not follow his heart. His exact words to my grandpa were "You don't have to buy the bakery to taste the buns!" My grandpa was never so sure of himself after that comment. "Let him love" is so spot on Lumineers! Bravo.

They are celebrating 50 years of marriage this April. :-)

@aaronalviar9137

I was getting ready to thumbs down your post but luckily I kept reading. Very nice story.

@WaitaMinute574

Wtf, as long as I know in this case you are not allowed to taste the buns, what was this man thinking lmao
But good story though :)
