Complex Terms
The Human Abstract Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Careless, to try to think that we've progressed
And the consequence of walking quietly
We only know, what we've been told
Self's exposed and overloaded
These monuments built by thieves
Keep us contained
Polished they stand and guide us
I found a four leaf clover
Hidden within
Buried beneath my fears
And we fall, kneeling
Begging for scraps
Hands and arms stretched out
We reach for what we're given
So privileged
I'd imagine it could be the fall of man
We come from control
A paradigm that leads us through the valley
Into the mouths of wolves
We are being eaten alive
And we fall, kneeling
Begging for what?
The tailor's shop has closed
And we don't dress for miracles anymore
Oh, how we believe in
All the monuments built by thieves

Overall Meaning

The Human Abstract's "Complex Terms" is a song that explores the idea that society has not truly progressed despite the countless innovations and advancements made in technology and other fields. The lyrics suggest that individuals have become "overloaded" with information, leading to a tendency to conform to beliefs rather than seek out their own understanding. This conformity is reinforced through monuments built by "thieves," which serve to both contain and guide us.

The song's chorus, which repeats the line "And we fall, kneeling / Begging for scraps / Hands and arms stretched out / We reach for what we're given," suggests that people are willing to accept whatever is offered to them rather than seek out their own paths. The bridge of the song takes a darker turn, as the lyrics suggest that we are being "eaten alive" by a paradigm that leads us into the "mouths of wolves." The final verse sees the singer lamenting the loss of belief in miracles and the power of monuments built by those in power.

Overall, "Complex Terms" is a scathing critique of modern society, and a call to break free from the constructs that hold us back.

It's sad how great bands like this don't get the recognition they deserve. Instead mediocre bands that sound exactly the same are put on a throne by kids today. There comes a point where heavy "brutal" breakdowns become boring. Especially if it's song after song on the album. Bands like this are a breath of fresh air.
