Icarus
Bastille Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look who's digging their own grave
That is what they all say
You'll drink yourself to death

Look who makes their own bed
Lies right down within it
And what will you have left?

Out on the front doorstep
Drinking from a paper cup
You won't remember this

Living beyond your years
Acting out all their fears
You feel it in your chest

Your hands protect the flames
From the wild winds around you

Icarus is flying too close to the sun
And Icarus's life, it has only just begun
It's just begun

Standing on the cliff face
Highest foe you'll ever grace
It scares me half to death

Look out to the future
But it tells you nothing
So take another breath

Your hands protect the flames
From the wild winds around you

Icarus is flying too close to the sun
And Icarus's life, it has only just begun
This is how it feels to take a fall
Icarus is flying towards an early grave

You put up your defenses when you leave
You leave because you're certain
Of who you want to be

You're putting up your armor when you leave
And you leave because you're certain
Of who you want to be, oh

Icarus is flying too close to the sun
And Icarus's life, it has only just begun
This is how it feels to take a fall
Icarus is flying towards an early grave

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bastille's "Icarus" revolve around the idea of self-destruction and the consequences of one's actions. The chorus uses the metaphor of Icarus, the character from Greek mythology who flew too close to the sun, against the warnings of his father and melted his wax wings, plummeting to his death. In the same way, the singer warns of drinking oneself to death, not making anything of one's life, and being too reckless in the pursuit of one's desires. The first verse is directed at someone specific, as the singer points out that "they" are digging their own grave and will have nothing left. The second verse takes a more introspective approach, as the singer is speaking directly to the listener, reminding them to take another breath and not be scared of the future.

The bridge of the song brings up the idea of putting up defenses and armor when leaving, but the singer reminds the listener that the ultimate consequence of their actions is an early grave. The song closes on a bleak note, with the repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the cyclical nature of self-destruction.

Overall, "Icarus" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of recklessness and the importance of self-preservation. The mythical imagery in the lyrics underscores the universality of these themes and their timelessness.

"Never regret thy fall, O Icarus of the fearless flight,
For the greatest tragedy of them all,
Is never to feel the burning light."
- Oscar Wilde

@benjipixel1438

This Oscar guy obviously doesn't understand the strength that humility gives.

@onerosegrowing936

@@benjipixel1438 I don't think that's what the quote refers to. I think it's about risk and freedom.

@edwardtimothy3581

@@onerosegrowing936 true.

@byronstepherson4242

This from the guy who died a pauper and his children and grandchildren changed their names bc they were so embarrassed to be related to him. Quoting Wilde is like living in an unlit cave your entire life.

@JJ.23

@@byronstepherson4242you also have to realize that the world was much more conservative to those who were different than society's normal. (Also authors, posts and the works werent paid anything) so realistically, we should be judging him by today's standards. Dying poor isn't a bad thing. Also, again poets and the works weren't paid much at all for their work

@gabrielaciepy7075

This is actually a greek letter called delta - the triangle

@gabrielaciepy7075

Which is kind of cool because not only are they referencing a greek mythical character through content of the lyrics, they also used a subtle highlight in the written portion of the video as well btw I'm obsessed with the song oml😍
